Polymelior Overcomes ! Misfortune to Triumph Recovers After Being Pinched Back on Turn in Detroit Opener FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 26. Two handicaps divided the main interest on the mid-week card at Detroit today. The Polk Laffoon was a dash of six furlongs and the John S. Wiggins a gallop of one mile and a sixteenth. They were for purses of ,500 and ,000 respectively and were offered as the fifth and eighth races. A heavy shower fell before the running of the first race, leaving the track in good condition and a crowd of 12,000 turned out for the days sport. Polymelior, racing for L. Cavalaris, overcame severe interference to account for the first race when, after being pinched back badly on the far turn, he recovered to come around the field and wear down H. Rubins early pacemaker Ballacolas to be three-quarters of a length before the latter as the finish line was crossed. Only a half length away Valdina Secret was third for Mrs. Lottie Wolf in the field of a dozen. In the second race, also at six furlongs, W. J. Addisons Top Dollar proved much the best, taking command immediately after the start and drawing away at will in the stretch. Alanay was second, closing stoutly to gain his portion of the purse. Third went to Franch Lure. Top Dollar paid .30 and completed a Daily Double with Polymelior worth 9.40.
