Harveys Pal Among Six in Salvator Todays Arlington Feature Mile Test Bill Ross and Double Slam Regarded as Top Contenders Of Maine Chance Farm Colt ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 26. The Maine Chance Farm, which appeared to have a strangle hold on the three-year-old division, early in the spring before Lord Boswell, Star Pilot, Knockdown, and Perfect Bahram failed to perform to expectations, may be forced to depend on Harveys Pal in future sophomore classics this season, and here tomorrow the fleet son of Bull Dog Sun Celtic will get an opportunity to justify any confidence his trainer, Jimmy Smith, has in him. Harveys Pal is among the. six three-year-olds who will compete in the ,000 Salvator Purse, a one-mile jaunt that has attracted several fairly fast thoroughbreds, including Virden and Scotts Bank Balance, Brown Hotel Stables Double Slam, Robert Cudahys Overnight, Bomar Stables Bill Ross and Mrs. A. M. Creechs Cid Play. While the program tomorrow is much below the high standard established thus far at the meeting, the races appear, to be exceedingly evenly matched. The Salvator is fittingly named in honor of one of the first really outstanding horses of the American turf. A chestnut horse by that name competed on the eastern tracks before the turn of the present century, and his feats are still discussed among old-timers still around the courses. The highlight of Salvators career came in 1890 when at the old Monmouth Park in a race against time he sped a mile in 1:35, a record that endured for many years. Owned by J. B. Haggin, Salvator in three years of campaigning won 15 of his 19 starts. Won Four Races as Juvenile Harveys Pal goes in this race with a big question mark hanging over his head, although it is likely that he will be heavily backed by local patrons. As a two-year-old he displayed great promise, on occasions beating some of the topnotchers during his five trips to the post. He won four of these starts and it was the belief of Tom Smith, who was then training the Maine Chance horses, that he was destined for stardom as a three-year-old. The colt was shipped out to Santa Anita, where he failed to train to expectations and when the Maine Chance Derby contingent was shipped to Kentucky, Harveys Pal was sent to Arlington Park where he was to be given a chance to find himself. He was, incidentally, one of the horses who escaped death in the fire that caused the destruction of most of the Maine Chance two-year-olds. On Memorial Day, the colt was sent over to Hawthorne for the 5,000 Francis S. Peabody Memorial, and after racing up with the early pace, he tired as if in need of further conditioning. Since then he has been a frequent visitor to the local training strip, and according to dockers he is back in fine trim and ready for an exacting performance. Although Double Slam finished "up the track" when Spy Song was going under the wire in a race here last week, he is another who has displayed previous promise and who may show considerable improvement. Double Slam, who is a full brother to the handicap star, Seven Hearts, was among the many thoroughbreds who fell by the wayside when they were subjected to the hard grind that goes with preparing for the Kentucky Derby. He was declared from the Downs classic after sustaining a slight injury. He has been freshened up nicely and looms as one of the toughies of the Salvator. Bill Ross seems to be a well-conditioned gelding. The son of Display Beth Bon has had a stiff campaign under his belt this season, and on occasions he has shown enough to stamp him as a better-than-average three-year-old. Overnight has been something of a disappointment. Bank Balance holds one victory over the promising colt, The Dude, this season. Cid Play continues to remain a puzzle. When he is up to his best performance he is capable of making some shifty rivals step fast to beat him.
