Elmo T. Takes Nantucket And Gives Licausi Triple Holds Plebiscite Safe in Drive At Suffolk in Surprise Victory SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 26. Joey Licausi, the Brooklyn apprentice who is the leading rider of the country, was on a winning surge, as he topped his days efforts by piloting Mrs. C. P. Amodies Elmo T. to a front-running, surprise victory in the Nantucket, sixth and feature race at Suffolk Downs today. The five-year-old chestnut son of St. Elmo n. was rated at 10 to 1 odds by the 15,211 hot weather patrons, chiefly because he was coming off a sprint in which he had finished second after encountering difficulty and also because he was up against such rivals as Spangled Game, owned by Mrs. R. Metcalf and Ber-Mar Farm, and W. E. Schlusemeyers Gabe Paul. The other starters in this event at a mile and a sixteenth were M. Wexlers Plebiscite and Little River Stables Johnny Jr. Spangled Game Slightl Favorite Spangled Game was a slight favorite over Gabe Paul, but as matters developed it really was a two-horse race between Elmo T. and Plebiscite, with the latter never being able to reach the winner, although another couple of strides might have made a difference in the final placing. As it was, the only time Plebiscite was even with Elmo T. was in the run for the clubhouse turn, but then Elmo T. took the lead by more than a length, with Johnny Jr., Spangled Game and Gabe Paul in that order behind the first two. In the backstretch, Spangled Game moved up to third position as the pace became too hot for Johnny Jr., while Gabe Paul was starting his move. Plebiscite made a run at Elmo T. but could not make up much ground. At the three-eighths pole, Plebiscite and Spangled Game again charged, but when the field straightened out, Elmo T. going a bit wide, was clear again with Plebiscite now being taken inside the pacemaker. In the final 70 yards, Elmo T. began to get late, but he still had just enough to hold off Plebiscite at this point. Spangled Game was third and Gabe Paul fourth. The feature event marked the third successive triumph for Licausi, who previously had brought back confidence to the figure experts by riding two favorites, E. E. Cragins Midway Sun in the fourth and Mort Stuarts Ogham in the fifth.
