Papa Redbird, Star Reward Clash Six Other Classy Sprinters In Oakwood Purse at Detroit Miss Mommy Competes With? Curtain Up HandicapWinner And Fast Dixiana Homebred FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 21. — The Michigan Racing Association will inaugurate a week of the finest sport ever offered in this area when eight high class horses parade postward here Monday in the six furlongs Oakwood Purse. The quick Oakwood field is to bring together a galaxy of stars made up entirely of stakes and handicap thoroughbreds and the sprint feature undoubtedly will prove one of the real highlights of the current Motor City season. Headed by Joseph A. Goodwins Papa Redbird, 1947 Arlington Classic victor and the winner of the Curtain Up Handicap here on opening day, the Oakwood probable starting band is one of quality. Other than Papa Redbird, Hal Price Headleys Plumper, Charles T. Fishers Dixiana speedster, Star Reward, Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Miss Mommy, Mrs. Lottie M. Wolfs Childeric, Bernard J. Bax King Bay, S. M. Newmeyers Turbine, and Theodore D. Buhls Crack Reward are scheduled to meet in the Monday allowance dash. Papa Redbird has been made the early favorite for the Oakwood on the strength of his scintillating record and his impressive and game triumph here in the Curtain Up. Undoubtedly one of the fleetest colts in training this season, Papa Redbird, a homebred son of Balladier and Taj Bibi, is to answer the bugle Monday under 124 pounds and he will be ridden by Willard Cook. Eagerly Awaited Return Engagement Star Reward, who is to race under 123 pounds in the Oakwood, will be ridden by jockey Robert Lee Baird, presently leading the local reinsmen. Star Reward gave a good account of himself in the Curtain Up, while shouldering 120 pounds, which burden was the same as that of Papa Red-bird. The return engagement between the Dixiana flash and the crack Goodwin colt certainly is attracting a major share of attention from Detroit racing followers and the contemplated duel between ,-the pair should furnish excellent sport. Miss Mommys race behind Shy Guy in the Border City Handicap stamps her as one of the best fillies on the grounds and , she could upset the top-seeded ones should she run back to her previous engagement. , Miss Mommy gets in the Oakwood with 110 pounds and Euclid LeBlanc, contract rider for the Shaffer establishment, is to be at the reins. Plumper, Crack Reward, King Bay, Tur-i bine and Childeric have shown flashes of i class and are dangerous at the sprint dis- • tance. Plumper is a stakes winner, King , Bay holds a decision over Star Reward in ; the Peabody Memorial and Turbine once , whipped Polynesian and also won the 1948 ; renewal of the Spring Handicap. Jerry ; West will handle King Bay Lois Cook has the mount on Plumper, while Tommy Fico ; has been assigned to ride Childeric. Motor City racing followers are to be ; treated to two other outstanding events • this week, the ,500 Michigan Mile is to i have its decision over the turf course on ■ Wednesday and the 5,000 Frontier, a six-: furlong allowance stake, is to headline the : program next Saturday. The Michigan Mile ■ drew the nominations of 24 seasoned performers, while the Frontier attracted 18 en- ] tries from the three-year-old division. The Michigan Mile probable starting ■ band will be headed by the fleet grass track performers, Hal Price Headleys Pellicle, [ Jacob Shers Frere Jacques, Raymond An-, kenbauers Porters Broom, O. F. Woodwards Sir Sprite, and Babs Damion, who ; carries the silks of Jay D. Weil, Inc. The mid-week feature is to be the first of a series of important turf races and it its to be decided under allowance conditions. Mrs. Ellsworth H. Augustus Seven League, a recent winner here, and Balmoral r C. E. Buckleys Reportable, O. F. Woodwards Sir Sprite, E. Barry Ryans Touch Control and Trump Heavy; Estate of C. S.Popovitzs Love Sonnet; Henry rests Cotton Joe and Traveler; Mrs. George C. Whites Bright Steel, and P. L. Grissoms. Master Bid are other Michigan Mile eligibles that may accept the issue in the Wednesday stake. The Frontier undoubtedly will prove one of the best sophomore attractions of the current season. John Kinards Johns Joy, who last year accounted for the Duncan F. Kenner Stakes, the Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap, and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, is the early choice for the sprint. Johns Joy, roughed considerably in the Kentucky Derby, his last start, was beaten a narrow margin by Woodvale Farms Halt in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, spotting the victor five pounds in the nine furlongs fixture. While Johns Joy has been accorded the post of Frontier early favoritism, the Kin-ard colt may meet some rather sturdy opposition next week in Mrs. G. C. White and E. W. Thomas Our Request; Hal Price Headleys Lithe and Yes .You; Lexbrook Stables Lextown, who may ship over from Chicago for the Frontier; Henry Forrests improved Summond, Mrs. Moody Jolleys Mr. Jay, and Brownell Combs Sequence. The latter filly, a well-bred daughter of Count Fleet and Miss Dogwood, won three straight engagements last year before suffering a defeat and also achieved honors in the Princess Pat Stakes at Washington Park after speeding over that six furlongs in 1:10. _,,...„. ,
