Nine Contest Burning Blaze Purse Sir Bim Expected To Rule Favorite Rice Veteran Faces Donaris, Lady Lureen and War Ruler In Lincoln Fields Feature WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., May 21. — With some 250 horses from Churchill Downs, which completes its meeting today, slated to fill up every available stall at the local course and the overflow being sent to the Lincoln Fields track at Crete, the second week of the Lincoln Fields Racing Associations 30-day session is expected to pick up tremendously, both in attendance and mutuel handle. It also is hoped that the weather will settle down after cutting up some fancy capers during the initial six days of sport. Headlining Mondays * program is the Burning Blaze Purse, a three-quarters of a mile dash designed for platers of the ,000 variety. Topping this field is Mrs. Ada L. Rices former stakes winner, Sir Bim, a veteran who was declared from his assignment the other day while seeking a more suitable spot. Others in the field are Mrs. J. L. Chesneys Lady Lureen, Happy Stables Last Drink, I. S. Wfeiners Don Coventry, Mt. Pleasant Stables Sandslinger, C. L. Dupuys Verona Sands, William H. Bishops Donaris, N. J. Millers War Ruler and Jim Sands Steeple Jack. Sir Bim is to be ridden by the clever reinsman, Eldon Nelson, who has shown splendid form as a journeymen jockey at the meeting. The seven-year-old son of Bimelech — Airegla, by Bubbling Over, was entered in a race for ,500 platers on Thursday, but because of the sloppy condition of the track he was scratched. The task in the Burning Blaze appears considerably easier. He is to carry only 112 pounds and his opposition doesnt seem at all powerful. More than likely, -he will be one of the most prohibitive choices on the entire-program. Showed Speed at Sportsmans Lady Lureen will be making her initial start of the meeting. She showed fair speed in a couple of races at Sportsmans Park, but couldnt handle the sharp turns and it was decided to give her a short rest with this session in view. She gets in the race nicely under 105 pounds and the stylish Californian, Donald Wagner, is to ride. William H. Bishop, who has horses in his barn to fit almost any type of race, will be represented nicely by Donaris, a gelding who beat a fair-to-middlin field in the finale on yesterdays program. The four-year-old son of High Breeze — Kind Annie raced for ,000 and is earning a chance to see what he can do against ,000 opposition. Don Coventry, who also raced in the test won by Donaris yesterday, will be sporting new colors, for he was claimed from that heat for ,000 by I. S. Weiner from H. "Bill" Belk. The gelding is a very consistent sort and during the winter at Phoenix, Ariz., he was among the leading handicap stars there. Next week-end the host organization will offer a pair of important fixtures, with the 0,00 added Steger Handicap attracting the leading sprinters on the grounds, while on Monday, Decoration Day, the Peabody Memorial, at a mile and one-eighth, will offer the richest prize of the meeting, : 5,000 added, and is expected to draw a number of high-ranking three-year-olds. Presently, Delegate looms as the heavy favorite for the Steger. The fleet gelding began his 1949 Illinois campaign by shouldering top weight, 122 pounds, and authoritatively downing Enforcer, With Pleasure, Anns Lee, Gangway and Happy Issue. Most of the latter probably will be in the starting field and there is expected to be an adjustment of weights thatll bring them closer together. The Peabody served as a springboard for the brilliant Billings last year. The Robert W. McHvain star won the test in fine style and later in the year showed such marvelous form while winning most of the stakes at Hawthorne that many Prairie State patrons had the temerity to rate him on a par with Citation at a time when Easterners were comparing the champion with Man o War and other greats of the past. Howard Wells, astute trainer who saddled Billings for last seasons renewal of the Peabody, is priming Mr. Smug for the event and the son of Alsab is reported to have trained well in Kentucky for the engagement. Other prominent factors in the Peabody are J. A. Kinards Johns Joy, Lex-brook Stables Lextown and Joseph A. Goodwins Ky. Colonel.
