But Why Not Wins Top Flight Stake Daughter of Blue Larkspur Pulls Away From Paddleduck And Allies Pal at Belmont BELMONT PARK. Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 8.— King Ranchs But Why Not scored a popular victory in the tenth running of the Top Flight Handicap at Belmont Park today. The • daughter of Blue Larkspur drew away from her four rivals nearing the finish of the mile and a sixteenth to ,tri-umph by three and a half lengths over Greentree Stables Paddleduck, with Dave Gorman urging her mildly through the stretch. S. D. Sidells Allies Pal finished three-quarters of a length farther back and a length before Harry LaMontagnes Conniver. Belair studs My Emma completed the small field for the stake named for C. V. "Whitneys splendid race-mare of 18 years ago. But Why Not was a solid choice with the majority of the crowd of 20,011 who turned out in bright, clear and cool weather, paying .20. She was the fourth successive winning favorite, being preceded by conflict, ,70; Striking, .10, and Darnaway, .60. Second Win in Seven Starts The King Ranch mare was scoring her second victory in seven starts this year, having won the rich Firenze Handicap at Jamaica, before finishing third in the Metropolitan and second in the Suburban against males. But Why Not required 1:43% for the distance, without being fully extended. The disappointment of the Top Flight was Conniver, who appeared in fine fettle in the paddock and post parade, showing none of the nervousness that has afflicted her on occasions this spring. However, she was totally lacking in the finishing drive that made her the champion of her sex last year, when But Why Not was in a temporary eclipse after having dominated the three-year-old fillies the previous year. Paddleduck was first out of the gate at the start of the Top Flight, but Allies Pal quickly sprinted to the front as the first" Continued on Page Two But Why Not Home in Clear In Renewal of Top Flight Continued from Page One quarter was run in a sluggish :24, running up a lead of more than two lengths over But Why Not and Paddleduck, who raced heads apart. Conniver was dayight farther back, racing on the rail, while My Emma trailed. The order didnt change in the long run down the far side and around the turn, though But Why Not cut Allies Pal lead to a length and drew a half-length before Paddleduck. Conniver had dead aim on the leaders and plenty of racing room on the rail, but it was evident that she didnt have the punch to get through the opening. Allies Pal ran out of wind at the top of the stretch and But Whjf Not sped past, followed by Paddleduck. But Why Not drew away steadily in the run to the wire, while Paddleduck fought on without avail. Allies Pal saved third money when Conniver bore out sharply in the finalsixteenth. A few hours after the retirement to stud of Maine Chance Farms Mr. Busher was announced, his full-sister, Ogden Phipps* Striking, graduated in the fourth race, coasting five furlongs of the Widener straightaway in :57% with Eddie Arcaro sitting snug all the way. Nelson I. Asiels Good Sport finished well to take the place five lengths behind the winner, with Elk-cam Stables Blue Kay a nose away in third place before Gustave Rings Sailors Choice, who was a head out of the money after leading for the first quarter. It was a highly impressive performance by the daughter of War Admiral— Baby League.
