J., June 8.— A nominating field of 48 thoroughbreds, threet year-olds and upward, has been made eligible for the June 18 renewal of the 0,000 Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park, first stake race scheduled for the coming 47-day racing season which opens Friday, June 17. The Salvator, once around the mile oval, posthumously honors the mighty horse of that name who sped to a mile record over the straightaway at old Monmouth Park in 1890. Its inaugural running last season was won by Vertigo n. Some of the outstanding middle distance performers in the East have been named for the 1949 edition of the Salvator Mile. The Sanford Stud Farms Round View will ; attract most local attention because of his victory in the 5,000 Monmouth Handicap two years ago in track record time, but . his Salvator assignment will be an exacting one. In the ranks facing him are such as William G. Helis Rippey, one of the best sprinters along the seaboard; Mrs. Ethel D. : Jacobs Up Beat, who equalled the track record for six furlongs in his last at Belmont I Park; Frank Frankels Flashco, winner . of the first running of the Santa Anita Maturity; the Grandview Stables team of Erigeron and Royal Lover, the former a i Monmouth stakes winner of 1948; Alfred I G. Vanderbilts vastly improved Loser : Weeper; the Greentree Stables Coincidence • and Doubtless H., the latter a highly r regarded Argentine import; Glen Riddle i Farms Faraway, and many others of note. . Last season a field of 13 accepted the ; issue in the once over lightly mile race, , but the current nominating band is so formidable and so chock-full of class that b the June 18 renewal may find the parading I lineup even larger and the possibility of £ splitting the race into two division has already ■ been discussed.
