Nine Named for Lincoln Fields Dash Outskirts Is After Third Win of Meet Don Coventry, Merrymarch, Whose, Sgt. Brown Among Endovina Fillys Opponents WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., June 8. — Ben Endovina, a Chicago produce merchant, sends out what may be a savory platter for form players when his speedy filly, Outskirts, competes in the Signator Purse, six-furlong feature for ,500 claim-ers here tomon-ow afternoon. The four-year-old daughter of Littletown — Mary Hy has earned a pair of victories during the local Lincoln Fields meeting and in her other start she lost her rider shortly after the break. Outskirts is moving up slightly in class tomorrow, but her general form is such that she will command much respect in the wagering marts. Slated to meet her are Shady Brook Farms Merrymarch, a former stakes competitor; W. C. Jones Big Casino, who at one time was regarded as a fine prospect by the Dixiana stable; Mrs. Lawrence H. Thompsons recent acquisition, Sgt. Brown; I. S. Weiners Don Coventry; Meadow Acres Farms Billcella, Mrs. Karl Mayers Whose, Mrs. T. M. Pruetts Technicolor and Ben Fogelsons Antigone. Outskirts was acquired by Endovina last fall at Hawthorne via the claiming route for ,000 and until the current meeting opened it appeared that he made a bad investment for in her five succeeding starts the best she could do was to finish fourth. However, on May 19 she found her forte over a sloppy track and drove to a victory that found her thrashing ,000 platters. Next time out she was moyed up to the ,000 bracket, but unseated her rider before many strides. A. R. "Ace" Williams, however, sent her back against the same kind of company and this time she showed the finest race of her career, beating War Ruler, Poignancy, Kendor, Lass Quest and others. Pederson to Ride Whether or not she can hold her form against the better company that is to. compete in the Signator is a moot question. She gets in the race under 111 pounds and Gene Pederson, a veteran reinsman who has been attempting, to find his best stride after riding most of his career on the West Coast, is to handle the reins. Don Coventry, a consistent sprinter who has not been out of the money since he arrived from Phoenix, Ariz., earlier, in the year, looms as the main contender. He was recently claimed by Weiner for ,000 after he had finished second to Donaris and those in back of him were Sangone and Favorito. The latter, only Monday, forced With Pleasure to a hard drive when finishing second to the classy Breault horse. In his most recent outing, Don Coventry, a four-year-old son of Crack Favor— Coventry Rose, was a fast-closing third to Rousing Night and Shaws Pride, an embattled pair that finished noses apart and a neck in front of the Weiner representative. Don Coventry finished in the money in 13 of his 16 starts this year, a record held by few platers of his class. Last year he was even more successful, finishing first on three occasions, and four other times in the picture in eight starts. Merrymarch, who still is quite capable of winning when properly placed despite his eight years, last raced with a ,000 claiming tag. He displayed an excellent turn of early speed but tired through the stretch of the seven-furlong dash and was beaten by Up Grade, Lyds Boy, Fighter Jack, and Vesuvio. At six furlongs, which always has been his best distance, he may show marked improvement. He whipped a field similar to that in the Signator at Churchill Downs before coming here. Whose last competed against ,000 company and flashed a creditable effort. He displayed speed from the start and was going gamely at the end of a dash won by Uncle Otho. In a previous start he showed a fine race against horses of the 0,000 claiming bracket. Obviously, trainer George A. Ury is seeking to find the class in which victory is possible.
