Narragansett Inaugural Taken by Evening Rose Two Minus Pools Occur in Previous Events on Program NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 8. — Evening Rose, a homebred daughter of Bull Brier — My Date, owned by Mrs. B." F. Lister, a Rhode Island patron, handled her 104 pounds in grand fashion this afternoon as she annexed the Inaugural Purse at Narragansett Park before an opening day crowd of 9,064. The speedy filly carried Frank "Nubbins" Keene to her easy score in 1:11% for the six furlongs. Three and a quarter lengths back of the winner, Phil Godfreys Tavistock earned runner-up honors, a length and a half before Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Bedwells Oidenasai. The Narragansett Racing Associations 28-day meeting opened under ideal weather conditions. A bright sun, cooled by a light breeze, was the order of the day as the thoroughbreds returned to Rhode Island this afternoon. Followers of chalk horses failed to enjoy the day, however, with only one choice winning in the first six events of the day. In the Inaugural, starter Eddie Blind sent the seven starters off in close alignment out of the chute at the beginning of the backstretch. Keene lost no time getting Evening Rose in full stride and held a length lead over Tavistock as the initial quarter mile was run in :23 flat. The ulti- Continued on Page Ttvo Narragansett Inaugural Taken by Evening Rose Two Minus Pools Occur in Previous Events on Program Continued from Page One mate winners lead increased by a half-length as she registered :47 seconds for the half-mile and without the aid of the whip, Evening Rose responded to the apprentice lads hand ride to win her second victory in 1949. Todays triumph was worth ,725 of the gross ,500 purse. Overlooked in the wagering, Evening Rose paid a tidy 9.80. D. A. Rosenbaums American Glory upset the pre-race calculations in the Hillsgrove Purse that preceded the Inaugural when he dashed to a three and one-half length score over A. P. Cotters Petey Cotter. Another half-length back, Sandy Strand Stables Daddy Joe finished third in the field of six starters. Ridden by Jimmy Peres, American Glory traveled the six furlongs in 1:11% to return a 4-1 mutuel to the backers who were attempting to knock down the odds-on Petey Cotter. The Cotter colt was giving his opponent 11 pounds, carrying 122 including Darrell Madden. Madden had the son of Saint Andrews forwardly placed as he remained just back of the rapid pace set by Torrence Melroses Seely for a half-mile. Rounding the final, bend, Petey Cotter came through on the inside to take a short lead but drifted to the center of the track under his heavy package and this move was made to order for American Glory. Peres lost no time taking advantage of the opening and needed only slight rousing tactics on his part to send the Roman colt into a lead that was too much for Petey Cotter to overcome. The result of the Hillsgrove caused a minus pool of ,865, the second deficit of the afternoon. In the third race for juveniles at. five and a half furlongs, Irving Gushens Georges Girl toyed with her field to win by four and a half furlongs. Installed at 3 to 10, Georges Girls triumph cost the track ,934 in a minus place and show pool.
