See Field of Ten For Motor City Johns Joy, The Fat Lady And Lextown Seen as Main Rivals in Stake Tomorrow FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 8. — The probable starting band for the 0,-000 Motor City Stakes, one mile and one-sixteenth sophomore feature, is rapidly taking shape and present indications are that a field of at least 10 three-year-olds will answer the bugle in the Saturday headliner. Present choices for the Motor City are John Kinards Johns Joy, Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers The Fat Lady and Lexbrook Stables Lextown. The latter colt, who recently accounted for the Peabody Memorial, arrived in Detroit today from Washington Park and jockey Jack Richard will handle the M. A. Kern-owned star in the local week-end feature. While the aforementioned trio of highly-regarded Motor City eligibles is expected to go well Saturday, such outstanding performers as Addison Stables Arise, Hal Price Headleys Yes You and Shakeme, Sylvester W. Labrots Taran, Charles Rufis Blue Grip, White and Thomas Our Request, and O. Frank Woodwards Kosadus undoubtedly will be -under silks in the middle distance stake. Johns Joy has been training satisfactorily for the Motor City engagement and recently finished third in the Frontier Stakes behind Yes You and Arise, while conceding each of his rivals nine pounds in the weights. The Kinard colt displayed high speed in the Frontier, a six furlongs event, made the pace until nearing the finish, then faltered and was beaten just a length. Best 1949 Effort in Blue Grass Perhaps Johns Joys best performance of the season was his close second to Wood-vale Farms Halt in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland this spring. Halt defeated the son of Bull Dog and My Auntie by a scant nose at the end of the nine-furlong Lexington race and then both were unplaced in the Kentucky Derby. Halt, a nominee for the Motor City, raced disappointingly in the Yankee Handicap at Suffolk Downs last Saturday and will not be shipped out for his local engagement. The Fat Lady, one of the better members of her sex and age division this year, recently returned from Belmont Park where she ran a creditable race in the Coaching Club American Oaks. The Shaffer miss also finished second to Calumet Farms Wistful in the Kentucky Oaks this spring and was an impressive winner here in the Royal Oak Stakes, defeating Stole, Lithe and Our Request, among others. The Fat Ladys works have been quite impressive and trainer H. H. "Pete" Battle stated this morning that she can be classed a sure starter in the Motor City barring mishap. The Headley pair, Yes You and Shakeme, make up a decidedly strong Motor City Stakes entry and the Beaumont Farm homebreds have been training satisfactorily. Yes You came from off the pace to defeat Arise and Johns Joy in the Frontier and the manner in which he finished suggests that he will handle the longer Motor City distance in capable fashion. Shakeme recently defeated Blue Grip and Timeltel in a one mile and one-sixteenth overnight event and he presently is in excellent shape. The Grand Circus Park, a six-furlong sprint for 2,000 to 5,000 class platers, tops tomorrows program at the Fair Grounds. Nine of the faster thoroughbreds from that classification are entered in the main attraction and Henry Forrests Cotton Joe, Mrs. Ellsworth H. Augustus Balmoral, M. H. VanBergs Rose Bed, a recent winner and arrival from Chicago, appear best. John Kinards Eternal Bomb, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Bowles McCosh, Mrs. George C. Whites Bright Steel, R. S. McLaughlins Kingarvie, Dearborn Stables Clean Slate, and James Paddocks Blue Seal round out the likely starting field.
