M. Woods High Frequency, speedy daughter of Zacaweista and Bepwil, raced to expectations here today and easily captured the first running of the 0,000 Powder Puff Stakes. Confidently ridden by Manuel N. Gonzalez, the Wood miss was never .under pressure to beat her nine two-year-old filly rivals and she coasted to the end of the five furlongs with a two and one-half lengths advantage. Second honors in the dash fell to Dixianas Wondring, who was a length and one-half on Edwin K. Thomas Siama. Dickey Stables Growing Up ran fourth, while James C. Ellis Debutante Stakes winner, Aunt Jayne Z., could do not better than fifth. Under the allowance conditions of the Powder Puff, each of the 10 starters shouldered 113 pounds and High Frequency sped the five furlongs over the firm footing in :59%, registering the fastest time of the current meeting for that distance. Installed a 3 to 2 favorite, the Wood miss was a popular victress and she earned ,820 of the gross purse of 2,540 in her clever triumph. The Powder Puff marked High Frequencys second straight success here and the third of her seven-race career. Starter John Morrissey sent the Powder Puff field away from the stalls in good order and High Frequency assumed command at once, steadily increasing her margin to the upper turn, while Asphalt raced in second position and Wondring occupied third place. Entering the* stretch, High Frequency shook off Asphalt and then drew clear, withstanding Wondrings final bid without need of urging. Siama,*keen factor from the outset, closed strongly enough to get the short end of the purse but she could not seriously menace the leaders. Wirra Churchs Second Winner Chilly but clear weather was the order today in the Motor City sector and a crowd of 8,947 patrons turned out for the midweek program, which was decided on a fast track. , T. F. Devereux Wirra, homebred daughter of Equifox and Gayee, was the popular winner of the June Bride Purse, which brought out six three-year-old fillies. Well ridden by Ken Church, who was astride his second winner of the day, the Devereux miss coasted, to the finish of the six-furlong secondary attraction three and one-half lengths before Arthur B. Hancocks Nitro-mond, second by a nose over Hal Price Headleys Pella. Wirra, third in her previous local engagement, was confidently backed down to 11 to 10, and she made good in clever style. Roman Dayz, racing for the Louisville, Ky., partnership of Gleeson and Litwin, drove to a nose decision in the six-furlong opener under a strong ride by Ronny Nash. The winner, bumped hard by Dearborn Stables Erinsville at the stretch turn, recovered and held on gamely enough to defeat the latter by a sharp margin, while S. .Kilpat-ricks Sky Blonde closed determinedly to take third honors in the field of 10 ordinary three-year-olds. Roman Dayz was a rank outsider in the wagering and returned his few backers 2.20 straight after scoring his graduation victory in 1:13.
