► Stengel and Rolfe Admit Sox New American League Threat ■ See Challenge to Yankees Supremacy; CHe Hustle of Carrasquel, Fox and Busby BY MILTON RICHMAN United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., May 24.— Casey Stengel, an old alarmist at heart, today visualized the red-hot Chicago White Sox as a "definite threat" to the New York Yankees supremacy. "Theyre not too far away from us now," grunted Stengel, referring to Chicagos second place perch, "and theres no rule in the book that says they cant pass us. "Take a look at em," he added, with a flourish of his hand. Next to my own Phil Rizzuto. they got the best shortstop in the league in this Chico Carrasquel. When you got a good shortstop, youre gonna make trouble, I dont care what you say. "This Carrasquel cuts off a lot of base hits and helps their pitchers plenty. Then, how about the kid they got at second base?" . Casey was talking about Nelson Fox, who suddenly has blossomed into a long distance slugger. "That second baseman of theirs has improved tremendously in every department," Stengel pointed out. "Til let you in on a little secret," he said, winking. "The White Sox are gonna be up there a lot longer j than most people figured. They got a good, hustling ball club." J Agrees With Stengel I Red Rolfe, whose surging Detroit Tigers j are here for a two-game series with the Bronx Bombers, heartily concurred with Stengel. "The White Sox," he declared, "unquestionably are the most improved club in the league. I wish my club had some of their speed. We could use it. This new center fielder. Jim Busby, has made a tremendous difference." Someone pointed out that in a recent game Busby beat out an infield hit, stole second, then third and ultimately scored on a neatly-executed squeeze play. "Thats about par for the course," Rolfe said, grinning. " "Thats even par for Ty Cobbs course," a writer added. "The White Sox showing has made a big difference to the entire league," Rolfe went on. "It used to be that Chicago was pretty much of a soft touch, but those days are gone! You have to battle the White Sox every second nowadays and even then youre not sure that they wont beat you." Like Stengel, Rolfe said he was surprised by Fox fine showing and agreed that Carrasquel was one of the standout players in the league. "They look like a new ban club from the one they had last season," he concluded. "Chicago is going to make a lot of trouble and it could finish among the first four." No doubt about it, the rest of the .clubs are waking up to the fact that the White Sox really are in the league.
