I Westhampton Striving To Make Amends Today Mason Runner Disappointed at Odds-On Last Week at Camden GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 24. — Sam A. Mason TXs Westhampton, a bitter disappointment when beaten at odds-on here last week, will have ah opportunity to redeem his standing tomorrow in the featured six-furlong Assembly Purse. Although he had no obvious excuse for his defeat, Westhampton will likely again be favored tomorrow. Westhampton displayed brilliant form as a juvenile here in Jersey and a bright career was predicted for the son of Menow. He failed to stand up to training, however, and was not again brought out for competition until a four-year-old gelding during this meeting. Westhamptons debut could not have been more impressive. He went to the front early, and merely galloped to a six-length victory in 1:10%, which equals the fastest time turned in here this season.- The big and handsome chestnut was very fractious at the gate in his next engagement, and he then was either faint-of -heart or showing an erratic nature when unable to again display his vaunted Speed and finished a well-beaten fourth behind Yes You in a relatively slow 1:11. He pulled up apparently sound as a bell. If Westhampton is inclined to sulk, he will be less likely to do so tomorrow while meeting only six rivals, although there will be plenty of speed to challenge him in the early stages. Antonio J. Fernandez has been named the pilot and a brisk ride is assured. Chloe, a classy filly who races for the Pentagon Stable, "finished a bang-up second to Risk A Whirl in the Colonial Handicap here a couple of weeks ago and it may take 3. lot to beat her. She gets in under the allowance conditions with a moderate 109 pounds, although none of the contestants are heavily burdened, and Westhampton is shouldering only 108. Jay Cee Farms Bold Jo and George M. Crumps Tea Deb are a pair of quick-steppers who will force a battle for the early lead. Bold Jo gave an excellent effort last week in his first race of the season, and placed a half-length in front of Westhampton while finishing third. Tea Deb has not been out since Florida, and although she is not considered the classy filly that she was a couple of seasons back, she has been training well and could turn in an upset. Uptown, sent down from New York to race for the Twin Oaks Stable, is not one to be disregarded. Neither is Woodland Farms Overexposed, although he performed below expectations in his last. The remaining starter, C. B. Bonns Alfadur, appears out of his element and will have the green services of .a maiden apprentice rider.- ~ l . V , * i i I. J T ■ t 1 I f a t t a r •; r r. r
