REFLECTIONS by nelson dunsjan NEW YORK, N. Y., May 24.— Three Dot Shorts: Although discontinuing the racing stable, Mrs. W. L. Brann will carry on the breeding activities of the late Maryland sportsman and will sell eight yearlings at Saratoga, including a half-brother to Gallorette, worlds leading money-winning winning mare. mare. . . .During .During the the past past two two winning mare. mare. . . .During .During the the past past two two years, England has exported 27 stallions . Ned Kingwin, manager of the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, is one of the most gifted horse artists in the country and now has an exhibition of six lithographs in the Turf and Field Club restaurant at Belmont Park. . . Roughn Tumble is training steadily and will return to racing at Arlington_Park in Chicago. . .The 176th running of the Epsom Derby will take place Wednesday... Dr. Frank Porter Miller, the Riverside, Calif., breeder who bred Count Turf and sold him at Saratoga Springs for ,700, will return to the upstate Spa this season with an offering of eight colts and two fillies, including a half-brother to Jack Amiels Kentucky Derby winner. . .There is a question whether any racing stable will earn ,000,-000 or more this season . .If any one has a complete set of the American Racing Manuals, we know a newcomer to racing who would be interested in buying them. AAA The two runnings of the Acorn Stakes yesterday brought out most of the top three-year-old fillies now in training in the East, but what they offered in the way of a favorite for the Coaching Club American Oaks is dubious. At one mile, this split race was run over a sloppy track and that, of course, could make quite a difference ■ Sophomore Fillies Point for Coaching Club Battlefield Impressive in Sprint Victory If Colt Starts in Belmont, Arcaro to Ride Waterford Park Pleasing to Its Sponsor for an event which is at a mile and three furlongs, especially should the track be fast. Kiss Me Kate, winner of the first division, made a runaway of it, winning by 12 lengths. While the Count Fleet colts, such as Count Turf, Counterpoint and the older County Delight, have been scoring for the "Triple Crown" winner, Kiss Me Kate now adds to his stature. In the second division, Isador Biebers Nothirdchance defeated two highly-regarded fillies in A. G. Vanderbilts Sweet Talk and Herman B. Delmans How, recent winner of the Kentucky Oaks. It now appears as if the 0,000 Coaching Club American Oaks will draw a good sized field on June 2. AAA, Battlefield scored his first victory of the year when defeating six opponents in an allowance race at Belmont Tuesday. Carrying 126 pounds, the George D. Widener colorbearer completed a record of being first or second in 15 of his 16 starts to date, and has never been out of the money. The son of War Relic has not raced beyond seven furlongs, and that was in the Swift Stakes when he ran second to Jumbo. His latest test was at six furlongs, but now his trainer, Bert Mulholland, has him in keen condition for the one mile of the Withers Stakes on Saturday. While in this country, as well .as in England, some critics believe our three-year-olds should be tightened earlier in the season, it is our thought that the Widener trainer has brought his charge along perfectly, as his main objective has been the Belmont Stakes, which, at one and one-half miles, will be run June 16. Following the Withers, Battlefield is eligible for the Peter Pan, Which will be run June 9. While there seems to be suspicion in some quarters that Battlefield may have difficulty negotiating one and one-half miles, the Withers and Peter Pan will give a line on it. Nullify, who ran second to Battlefield the other day, has won only one race in seven starts this season, but may show to better advantage in the Withers. AAA Earlier in the week there was some talk at whether Eddie Arcaro would ride Battlefield or Bold in the Belmont Stakes. Arcaro stopped all that by saying, "I have got a verbal agreement with Mr. George Widener to ride Battlefield and I would not think of going back on my word. If it should come to pass that Battlefield does not go in the big race, then I will switch to Bold, as Preston Burch will hold him open for me as late as he can." There is no doubt that the countrys leading race rider is very much impressed with the Brookmeade Stables Bold. At Belmont, Arcaro was asked if he still believed, arts he stated after the Preakness running, that Bold may prove to be the three-year-old of the year. He answered, "I think he may be. He is a powerful animal, with good action and plenty of speed." The manner in which Bold went away from his opponents in the Preakness stamped him as a high class youngster. While he must be considered among the topnotchers, the Belmont Stakes and later important three-year-old events must be run before Continued on Page Thirty-Nine REFLECTIONS I By NELSON DUNSTAN Continued from Page Forty-Eight any one colt can stand out. It may be Bold, but it also may be one of several others. AAA Friends write us. that the new and modern Waterford Park went off to a fine start and is certain to be a popular race course Located at Chester, W. Va., on the Ohio River, the new track has Jong been the dream of Al Boyle, who not only planned it but supervised much of the construction work. Born in Libertytown, Md., Boyle, who is now a veteran operator, was called in to take over the Charles Town track in 1934. He reorganized that association and made it the success it is today. The new track, which is some 40 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, is described as one of the most beautiful in the eandstern United States. It is situated on 187 acres, part of which was an apple orchard before being purchased by Boyle. One of the innovations at this course is the distribution of free programs at the gate, The present meeting will run until July 4, with eight races daily. Between youngstown and Pittsburgh, there is little opposition from other courses. There is every reason to believe that Boyles dream track eventually will prove his biggest success in racing. _ I 1
