Whit Whiz in Front-Running Victory at Suffolk Downs SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 24. — Whit Whiz, a Jean Valjean colt owned by S. Finkelstein, displayed a liking for the sloppy going at Suffolk Downs today when he galloped to a front-running score in the featured Christopher Columbus Purse. Three lengths back of the winner, Shangriia Stables Flic Flac accounted for the place money, nine lengths before the even-money favorite, Carver and Willis Bulverde. The weather played havoc with the scheduled charity presentation which was to be offered at noon today. Top entertainers appearing in this sector were on hand as promised but had to forego their routines for abbrevated appearance. A driving rain whisked by the northeast wind made it extremely uncomfortable for the 8,052 patrons who came put for the show and races. Through the cooperation of John C. Pappas, president and general manager of Suffolk Downs and the horsemen, it was agreed to cancel the original seventh race in order to put on the show f6r the patrons. Following the running of the third race, Milton Berle emceed for Frankie Laine, and the Keane Sisters. Others who were introduced included Ralph Flanagan, Tony Bruno and Don Dennis. A total of ,500 was* realized through gate receipts and the Suffolk management increased that amount to present a check for 5,000 to the Christopher Columbus Catholic Youth Center Fund.
