Fancy Flyer Gains Honors In Hamtramck at Detroit Downs Kings Hope to Complete Double for Carl Graham Stable By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., June 16.- !arl Grahams Fancy Flyer scored his first success of the 1951 season here today, annexing the mile and one sixteenth Hamtramck Purse. Splendidly ridden by Darrell Madden, who won an earlier offering with the Graham establishments Robin Red, Fancy Flyer was along*in the late stretch to take a length verdict from Mrs. Frederick Sharpes steadily improving three-year-old colt, Kings Hope. Two and one-half lengths back, White and Thomas Our Request earned the minor portion of the purse while Mrs. A. Kuhns Storm Ridden, Theodore D. Buhls Bee; Lee Tee, and the G and G Stables Scotch Bim followed the placed trio to the wire in that order. Fancy Flyer shouldered 116 pounds and raced the middle distance over the fast strip in 1:45. One of several favorites to reach the winners circle during the afternoon, the Graham stallion returned his backers 9 to 10. Starter John Morrissey sent the Ham-Continued on Page Five Fancy Flyer Gains Honors In Hamtramck at Detroit Downs Kings Hope to Complete Double for Carl Graham Stable • Continued from Page One tramck field away from the stalls in a "line break" and Kings Hope hustled to the front before going a quarter mile, while Bee Lee Tee raced along in nearest pursuit of the Sharpe sophomore, and Fancy Flyer was no better than fourth, but saving ground. Approaching the upper turn, Kings Hope increased his advantage to two and one-half .lengths, while Bee Lee Tee displayed signs of having had enough, and Madden then called upon Fancy Flyer. Turning into the home lane, Bee Lee Tee chucked it and Fancy Flyer set sail for Kings Hope. After a sharp stretch duel, the older Graham representative raced into command and was increasing his margin when he swept by the finish. Kings Hope gave a commendable performance in defeat. He made all the pace and stuck diligently to his task during the drive and, although not good enough for Fancy Flyer, he was much the best of Our Request for the place. Pleasant weather and a fast track brought out a crowd of 16,000 for -the well-balanced half-holiday program. Southern Cookn, a homebred daughter of Balladier and Fond Wish, carried Joseph A. Goodwins silks to- a popular victory in the fourth race, which matched eight of the* better grade juveniles at four and one-half furlongs. Hustled to the front early by Eddie Danhauer, the Goodwin miss literally toyed with her rivals, coasting to the finish with a five-length advantage over her nearest rival, Terrell Brothers Tis Joe. Third honors went to he was an easy second. Tis Joe began alertly but Southern Cookn forged to the front before going a furlong. After shaking off an early challenge from First Heir, the Ultimate victress romped into the home lane with a four-length margin and increased that lead without need of pressure, winning with something left. Tis Joe made a bold but futile effort to catch the flying winner but was not equal to the task although he wasvan easy second to Xippi Pigeon. Southern Cookn, who won her first start here June 8, skipped along in :52%, which time was but two-fifths of a. second slower than the track record. The Goodwin filly was the 3 to 2 betting choice. Favorite players were off to a good start when Theodore D. Buhls Bowled Over scored a handy length and one-quarter victory in the six-furlong first race under Chuck Headleys clever handling. Bowled Over was forwardly placed "from the start and, after taking command near the finish, held Mrs. H. Hahaims fast-finishing Sickle Baby safe.
