Dorland/NATB Official, Writes Protesting Sen. Langers Bi.U LEXINGTON, Ky., June 16.— Grant A. Porland, a local breeder and vice-president and treasurer of the National Association of Thoroughbred Breeders, a federation of 12 breeding organizatipns throughout the country, has written Senator William Langer, Republican of North Dakota, sponsor of a bill to prohibit the interstate shipment of .horses and dogs for racing purposes, protesting the proposed legislation. Dorland disputes Senator Langers statement that this would stop illegal gambling. "It would not stop illegal gambling," Dorland wrote, "because illegal betting on horses is the smallest part of, the nations illegal gambling. A recent- study by the Boston Crime Commission indicated that much more money is gambled on baseball, football, basketball, boxing, etc., than is bet illegally on horses. In fact, the total gambled illegally in these channels is more than the total wagered on horses, whether through legal pari-mutuel machines or illegally with bookies. Banning thoroughbred racing would channel a very considerable amount of money bet on horses into other sports." Dorland also pointed out that if racing were banned in the TJhited States, horses wwild be "racing in* other nearby countries on a greatly expanded scale and bookies would be prepared to continue business at the same old stands." The NATB represents about 1,800 thoroughbred breeders.
