Call Over Proves Best in Salvator 19,645. Witness 4 MonmouthOpening Bedford Racer Turns Back Overexposed After Thrilling Duel; Ferd Is Distant Third By WILLIAM PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 16.— Before a record inaugural crowd of 19,645, Bedford Stables Call Over this afternoon displayed admirable courage under a superbly-judged ride by Mel Peter-, son and captured the fourth running of. the Salvator Mile. Woodland Farms Overexposed was at a half-length disadvantage at the finish, with Mrs. A. Schuttingers Ferd a suprisingly distant, six lengths behind and third. Weather conditions were ideal for the program which opened a 46-day meeting for the sixth year of operations at * this course. The wagering also set a new high for a first day, with the total expected to be well over the million mark. Call Oyer, a four-year-old Devil Diver colt who has never before been required to contest at a distance beyond seven furlongs, was winning one of his most impressive" races. He was burdened with 118 pounds, spotting Overexposed six pounds, and doggedly repulsed challenges from that one through the final half-mile to reach the finish in an excellent 1:38%; Although the time made the racing strip appear fast, it was decidedly damp, somewhat cuppy and termed "good." Jess Linthicum Surprises In an excellent supporting feature, G. M. Cohens Jess Linthicum took the measure of Mrs. Louis Lazares Sheilas Reward in the six-furlong seventh .race, with P. Ambrose Clarks Tea-Maker a length behind and third. Mrs. Schuttingers Ferd, who appeared a standout on paper in the stake, was carrying 122 pounds, but he probably suffered more from early interference by Pensava and the extreme outside post position than his heavy impost. The way the race was run, however, Call Over was decidedly best ,and deserved the ,225 as the winners portion of the, 2,150 gross purse. His total earnings for the year, boosted .by a victory in the Rowe Memorial at Bowie early in the season, now stands above 0,000. The early speed for the Salvator was supplied by Whiff enproof and Mr. "Buster, but they willingly turned over the lead to Call Over passing the half-mile. Overexposed raced as a team with Call Over from the very beginning, only on the outside, and he also surged up and between horses to match his stride with the ulti-made winner. Ferd went to the first turn with the leaders, but he was bumped and forced out by Pensava and then dropped down between horses where he gradually came into closer contention under the scuffling of Jimmy Stout. Peterson pumped steadily on Call Over while Sammy BoulmetiS occasionally worked over Overexposed with the whip and repeatedly lodged his bids. The result was in doubt up until the last yards, but then Call Over went about his business and was gradually going away.
