Larry Ellis Holds Off Stout Bid of Wise Margin to Score Favorite, Second Choice m Hard Duel at Suffolk Downs Before 29,216 Holiday Fans By JOE HIRSCH SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass.,. May 31. Larry Ellis, "the peoples choice" came through with a neck victory over Wise Margin in the 0,000 Tomasello Memorial Handicap today. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lingles six-year-old Easy Mon gelding, a 6 to 5 favorite, took the lead at the head of the stretch and staved off a determined bid by Wise Margin to return .40. Andre was a strong third. Larry Ellis, perhaps the most popular handicap horse in New England, was a disappointing fourth in the recent 0,000 Massachusetts Cap, while Wise Margin was the victor. Despite the evidence, the getaway day jury of 29,216 returned a verdict for the powerful Lingle gelding- and their choice -proved estimable. , Under Dal-rell Maddens experienced guidance, Larry Ellis covered the mile and a furlong in a brisk 1:49 and added a ,500 winners share to his seasons total earnings for a grand figure of 8,425. The victory marked a double for Madden, while the veteran Earl Gross and Norman Mercier each had a triple during the card marked by excellent riding. Mrs. Tomasello Makes Presentation The Tomasello was named in, honor of the late Joseph Tomasello, the Boston contractor , who built Suffolk Downs. Mrs. Frances Tomasello, his widow, presented ; the winners trophy to Mr. and Mrs. Lingle, accompanied by Judge John C. Pappas, the president and general manager of this track. The Memorial Day crowd responded in holiday fashion to the interesting card. Weather here was ideal for an afternoon of sport hot, clear, the sky cloudless and a slight breeze wafting in from the nearby Atlantic Ocean.- River Divide Farms Andre set the early pace with Park Dandy pressing the leader and Harry Ellis, held nicely off the pace, always within striking distance. Wise Margin, the second choice was a somewhat more distant fourth, hugging the rail in his favorite fashion. Park Dandy picked up the lead at the thrfip.-piehths nole. and as Andre tired a bit, Larry Ellis inched forward too in the middle of the track. With a little less than a furlong to go, Madden called on Larry Ellis and the gelding responded in heartening fashion. Wise Margin was blocked by Park Dandy at the head of the stretch and forced to come outside of W. J. Beatties good four-year-old. The extra effort cost him the race.
