Ascot Gold Cup Will Carry 5,000 Purse Next Year ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 31. Managing director Henry Green of the Ascot Park Jockey Club announced that next years Gold Cup will have a purse of 5,000. Green plans to up the purse ,000 with each years renewal. The Gold Cup, which is now one of the top ranking races in the Buckeye State, started as an overnight handicap 14 years ago with a 00 purse. Through Greens efforts the race has now reached the point where horses are shipped from the East as well as the Middle West. The River Divide Farms Some Fun won last Saturdays renewal of the race after being shipped here from Suffolk Downs by trainer Rollie Shepp. The horse was returned to New England following his victory.
