SOME FRIEND, never far back, responded to good handling during the stretch run and, disposing of FRANKS MAUDE, won going away. The latter, a sharp factor from the outset, entered the stretch with a clear advantage, was unable to hold the winner, but was much the best of the others. SMART EVE lacked early foot and could not seriously threaten the top pair. GREY MAGIC gave a fair effort and had no excuse. SON AL was outrun. BROWN BRUTUS was never prominent. HURRICANE began fast but failed to stay after engaging FRANKS MAUDE to the stretch. WISENHEIMER showed nothing. THESIS began poorly, losing all chance. COCK CROW was through early. CELTIC SPIRIT gradually worked way forward, was sent to the middle of the track, for the drive and, closing fast under strong handling, was up to dispose of the leaders in the last sixteenth. PECKS REWARD, well placed to the stretch, finished willjngly under punishment, but was not good enough for the winner. MISS OXFORD gave-a good effort and had no mishap. FEARFUL ODDS lacked early speed, BLUE FAY took command at once, set the pace to the final furlong and weakened: CALICO CREEK tired after racing well to the stretch. SU-JAY had no excuse. FAIR PILOT, a sharp factor from the start, reached the lead between calls during the stretch run, but was unable to hold the winner. SUN TAN GAL went to the front early, set the pace to the final furlong, then faltered. SECOND AVENUE made a bold bid when sent up on the outside entering the stretch, then weakened. GREATEST, on the outside throughout, was unable to reach serious contention. TRIUMPHANT could not keep up after showing early speed.. AVION had no excuse.
