Beaverdam Takes Laurels In Akron Cap at Ascot Scores by Neck Under Stauffer, Returns~2 Straight Mutuel By W. A: CRUSE l y ASCOT .PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, jVIay -5. — There was a tinge of spring in the air this Derby Day here at Ascot Park, arid the 7,723 fans on hand for the day appeared to enjoy-the-lerrients as well. The sun was bright-and reasonably warm for this time of the year, and the law,n of the clubhouse was well tilled. • The fact that the Derby was to be televised probably took the toll on the attendance figure, as well as the patrons who began to leave early. V. S. Lytles Beaverdam, a three-year-old Cable gelding, took down the laurels iri the Akron Handicap. -Capably .handled by jockey Harry Stauffer, the winners time, on the fast part of a difficult strip to classify, was 1:56%. The winners margin was a "long neck," and .the longest price on the board in the six-horse field, he returned a 2 straight mutuel. Jockey J. D. Porter had little difficulty in. getting to "the path" here which extended about eight to 10 feet off the outside rail, to garner two wins- for himself in the first three races on the card. This track condition is extremely unusual. Near the inside rail it dried out slowly, while the middle of the track was .very deep and holding, and lightning -fast in "the path." The condition- played havoc with the figures of the form players, alnd the outside horses were given most of the consideration because of the tracks surface. Porters first win was J. -Donahues Casey.s Hope, in the second half of the Daily Double. He kept the seven-year-old Head Play gelding on the extreme outside and negotiated the Ascot course in 1:57% to be five length the best of H. Nutters Ruthie S. Caseys Hope rewarded his supporters with a 2.00 mutuel. - In the daily double, R. Clarks Sighted, another outside post position in the first * race, combined with Caseys Hope for a 2.00 return. Porters next win was in the third race when he again found the outside to his liking to have H. Jolleys Busy Evening a head the best of A. Barrs Scrub. It was unusual, but bqth contestants raced on the extreme outside with the ultimate winner closest, to the outside rail. In turn, and it must be some kind of record, Scrub was-25 lengths best of his closest rival.
