Suffolk Spring Meeting To Stress Grass Racing - Two Turf Handicaps Scheduled; Track to Open Monday, May 14 EAST BOSTON, Mass., May 5.— With new emphasis on grass racing, Suffolk Downs will open its spring meeting here next Monday, May 14. The 36-day session will run through June 23, with the track-scheduled to conduct a fall meeting of 30 days from September 23 to October 27. This will be the 22nd year of operation for the track. Suffolk Downs, the only track in New England with a grass course, has slated two stakes for the turf. In addition, Judge John C. Pappas, president and managing director of the track, and Gordon Morrow, racing secretary, have arraned a pro-ram of overnight events on the grass, with at least three such races scheduled every, week. In all, Suffolk will present 10 stakes worth 52,000. The list is headed by the 22nd running of the 0,000 added Massachusetts Handicap at a mile and a quarter on June 20. The second richest feature on the calendar is the 5,000 added John R. Macomber Memorial Handicap, which will be run on the grass. This mile and a half test will be run for the second time, the inaugural last year won by Greentrees Maharajah. The other stake to be run on the grass . will be the Tomasello Memorial, which has been transferred from the dirt track this year. The 0,000 event at a mile and a sixteenth will headline the program on Memorial Day, May 30. Suffolk also has scheduled a new Olympian series, six races starting at a mile and a sixteenth and graduating up to a distance of two miles, which will be divided between the main track and the turf course. Track superintendent Joe Tomasello reports that the grass course is in perfect condition. Post time during the meeting will be 1:45 pjn.
