WOOD MEMORIAL FINISH — Winding Way Farms Golf Ace, who is entered in Mondays Greenvale Purse at Jamaica, is shown crossing the wire in front in the 1,000 Wood on April 21, but he was disqualified for bearing out sharply in the stretch and cutting in front of Head Man. The latter was awarded first place and Golf Ace set back to second. Golf Ace Goes in Prep for Withers Lost First Position In Wood Memorial Was Set Back for Swerving j In Front of Head Man; Son Of Erin, Eiffel Blue Entered JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 5.— The final week of spring racing at Jamaica opens Monday with a preview of Saturdays 5,000-added Withers Stakes at the same distance of a mile and one-sixteenth. Five of the eight three-year-olds entered for Mondays Greenvale Purse, a ,000 overnight event, are engaged in the week end fixture which will have its first running at Jamaica this year and probably its last. The Withers is one of the oldest three-year-old fixtures and is normally run at Belmont Park at a flat mile. One other change in this years Withers, which is expected to bet permanent, permits the entry of Winding Way Farms hard-hitting Golf Ace, a gelding, who is also in the Greenvale, for which he looms the favorite. Hitherto, geldings were barred from the Withers, as well as the Belmont Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Golf Ace, who will be ridden by Bobby Ussery, was a convincing winner of the Wood Memorial, convincing everyone, that is, but the stewards who disqualified him, for swerving out in front of Head Man. Golf Ace bore out badly in many of his races last year, a habit that caused him to be dropped into claiming races, but trainer Grady Williams discovered that he would follow a horse inside of him. Unfortunately, in the Wood, Golf Ace found himself alone on the lead and promptly reverted to his old habit. It is unlikely that Ussery will allow this to happen on Monday, even if the pace is slow. Son of Erin Winner of Swift The other Withers eligibles in the Greenvale are Mrs. Jan Burkes Son of Erin, winner of an overnight race and the six-furlong Swift Stakes in his last two starts; Mrs. C. Ulrick Bays Greek Spy, close second to Oh Johnny in the Fountain of Youth Handicap at Gulfstream before an illness sidelined him; Danny Arnsteins Eiffel Blue, fast-finishing second to Son of Erin in the Swift, and Isadore Biebers Will of Allah, who appeared to sulk in that stakes after a series of good races here and in Maryland. The Greenvale field is completed by Sailing Free, Sol-Hi and Corax. The first two would have an outside chance on their best races, while Corax is a French invader who raced on the equivalent of the "bush" tracks in his native land and has showed nothing here. All of the Greenvale candidates carry 116 pounds, with the exception of Greek Spy; who picks up 119 pounds. The five appearing in the Greenvale are the most likely candidates for the Withers, though the nominees include Mrs. Anson A. Bigelows disappointing Nail, Mrs. Wallace Gilroys Oh Johnny, Maine Chance Farms Gun Shot and Bushers Idol and C. V. Whitneys Born Mighty, Head Man and Career Boy. Born Mighty is a likely prospect for the local stake while the other two and Companas Stables Besomer are in todays Kentucky Derby and unlikely to run back next Saturday. Correction Cap Run Wednesday The second stakes on the final weeks agenda at Jamaica is the 0,000-added Correction Handicap for fillies and mares to be run at six furlongs on Wednesday. This dash is headed by Maine Chance Farms Myrtles Jet, winner of the Columbiana and Colonial handicaps this year, with 124 pounds. The same burden has been given Foxcatcher Farms former champion, Parlo, who has yet to make her seasonal debut and could undoubtedly find an easier spot. Wheatley Stables High Voltage, another former champion who has become completely unreliable, and Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Searching are likely starters with 120 pounds each. Brookmeade Stables Gandharva, who finished second lo Myrtles Jet after set- Contmued on Page Forty-Four ■ ; , : i Golf Ace Goes in Prep Event For Withers at Jamaica Oval Continued from Page Seven ting a scorching pace in the Colonial, is also a probable with 119 pounds, including Bill Boland.- Reginald N. Websters Sorceress, who was an easy winner over High Voltage in her seasonal debut here this week, gets in the Correction with 114 pounds and is sure of strong support. The daughter of Slide Rule was picking up where she left off last season, having won her 1955 -finale in November and seems to have finally justified the high hopes held for her by trainer Lucien Laurin. Other possibilities in the Correction include Pin Oak Farms Bless Pat, 111; Meyer J. Kaplans Up Betimes, 110; Maine Chance Farms Fantine Busher, 107; C. V. Whitneys Silent One, 105, and Sanford Stud Farms Louise Bell and Nelson I. Asiels Tarquilla, 104 each. Tarquilla was rather unlucky when finishing behind Sorceress and High Voltage last out and probably should have been closer. She might be dangerous at the weight.
