DerbyBy By XOM OREILLY JAMATCA L I N Y May 3 Some years ago when every old lady in America new game invented by Brooklyns Bums Mrs Payne Whitney a Dodger fan had a colt from the mare Goose Egg appropriately named Shut Out and he won the 1942 Kentucky Derby He was ridden that May Saturday his own words got hardheaded about that one and although John and the wrong Mr Wright Aifew ays before that Derby had interesting interview with Plain Ben Jones over on the Churchill Downs backside and paper to get a screwball picture of me with a horse This photogra ¬ pher knew Plain Ben and got him to go alone with th Again was easily the prettiest of tfie trio Sun Again was entered in that Derbj but had been scratched a day or two be fore Trainers with Derby candidates are not likely to go for gag pictures and suet foolishness with the big event looming ahead of their horse After the picture taking was over I asked Ben why he hac scratched the horse In my book Sun Agair looked like a pretty good horse horseSun Sun Again is a pretty good horse son paid Ben In fact hes a damned good horse If I ran him in this Derby hed have a real good chance to win it But thats the very reason Im not gonna run him Hed have a mighty good chance but Im not sure And when I run a horse in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby I wanna be sure sureSecond Second Money Not Worth Trouble TroubleI I dont wanna run any horse in the Kentucky Derby and take second money Yknow why Because it aint worth it This is a tough horse race Its one o the toughest in the world These horses are only threeyearolds and this is early in the year That race is a mile and a quarter You can ruin a real good threeyearold running him in this race and unless you win it it aint worth the money Theres too many good races ahead of you This is the big one I Jrnow Its great to win it And when I run a horse in itMhats what I expect to do win not run second secondI I remembered that Ben had previously won the Derby with Lawrin and Whirl away Sun Again went on to become a fine stakes horse And the following year Calu ¬ mets Pensixgwon the Derby By the time Citation and Ponder showed up of course young Jimmy Jones was really training the horses But there was no doubt in my mind that Bens Kentucky Derby policy still prevailed When the Run for the Roses came around Calumet either held the top hand or it didnt play That was why i insisted on betting Ponder even though Ben told the press that the horse didnt have a chance and he was only be ¬ ing started because becauseThis This is the 75th an diamond jubilee Derby and Mr Wright the late Warren Wright just wants to see his colors go to the post postIf If you recall Ponder paid a handy 34 mutuel mutuelAnd And that is why Saturday I must keep up with the Joneses I dont care if they start only Iron Liege or General Duke or both of them When I see those Calumet colors going to the post in the Kentucky Derby my two dollars must go with them Frankly I favor Gallant Man and Ill have a sentimental deuce on him too buti can ¬ not ignore the lesson I learned that pleas Continued on Page FortyFive OReilly on Racing ContinueiT ContinueiT1rom 1rom Page Six Sixant ant morning on the Churchill Downs backside years ago agoOf Of course this thing doesnt just work for the Jones boys There is a little old horseman named Sunny Jim Fitzsim mons on the grounds in Louisville with a horse named Bold Efuler Listen to this George Slim Sully the oldtimer who saddled Count Turf when that worthy won the Derby back in 1951 was sitting in the Railroad Stables box at Jamaica the other day Slim is the gray Man ¬ hattan sage who used to rub horses back when Jim Fitzsimmons was riding which you must admit is really back there Slim who is one of my favorite people has a highpitched cracked voice that bites off wise observations backed up by a knowing chuckle chuckleIm Im bettin Bold Ruler he cackled with an accompanying chuckle How can he miss The old mans down there aint he If he wasnt down there it might be something different But hes actually on the grounds Look out Last time I talked to him I said Where ygoin He said Chicago Yknow what happened out there dont ya Nashua beat Swaps So I says to him this time Where ya goin He says Kentucky Thats enough for me Hell have that Bold Ruler tightened up like a fiddle string Hes smartern them Jones boys or any other fella that ever looked at a horse horseWell Well thats what makes horse racing You cant go against Calumet if they are entered and who dares bet against Bold Ruler when Fitzsimmons is on the grounds himself A poll of the press box the other day showed 15 men selecting Bold Ruler nine picking the Calumet entry and five going with Gallant Man Not one writer picked Round Table the western horse JVt first this might seem like sheer preju ¬ dice but on second thought few of the writers had seen this son of Princequillo Knights Daughter Yet this horse owned by Oklahoma oilman Travis M Kerr could go to the post second choice choiceActually Actually this is one day in the year when a turf writers selections might as well go out the window Everybody in America is watching this one And they arent just idly looking on They all have a choice The Kentucky Derby undoubt ¬ edly the greatest race of the year always has been a perverse event Unlike the rule in the medical profession when the doctors disagree the patient doesnt die he thrives thrivesO O weep no more my laydee
