MISTER JIVE Galloped out six furlongs in 116 in a preDerby trial yesterday Chances Bright Gen Duke Will Go Report Calumet Farm Colts Bruised Foot Much Improved Jones Will Wait Until This Morning for Final Decision After Quarter Mile Blowout By JOE HIRSCH HIRSCHCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 Id saythat he was 75 per cent better than he was yesterday Dr Alex Harthill observed this morning at tlie Calu ¬ met barn as the young veterinarian watched the injured Gen Duke circling the shed row Later after trainer Jimmy Jones had the handsome son of Bull Lea and Wistful out on the track for some light jogging he was inclined to agree and as of this writ ¬ ing chalices seem bright that the early favorite for tomorrows 83rd running of the Kentucky Derby will get to the post postWell Well know more tomorrow morning Jones told a crowd of reporters shivering near the barn after an overnight 30degree drop in temperature here in Derbymad Louisville Hes vastly improved and were going to blow him out a slow quarter of a mile If he comes out of his move in good condition then hell start If he doesnt then he probably wont Hes been too good a horse for us to take any chances with him as much as wed like to run in the Derby DerbyI I hope to be able to reach a decision before the wagering on the Derby begins at 10 a m Jones continued We want to protect the public as much as possible At the same time the situation may present itself where we could be in doubt until the afternoon and Id want to give the colt every chance to make it itIn In other developments on the rapidly shifting local scene John L Appelbaums Mister Jive worked fiveeighths of a mile in 102 Clifford Lusskys Federal Hill stepped a brisk three furlongs in 35 and Mrs Ada L Rices Indian Creek got a half mile in 52 Vester R Tennessee Wright trainer of T Alie Grissoms Shan Pac also revealed that jockey J Ralph Adams who is to ride the son of Shannon It tomorrow in the Run for the Roses is in good shape following a tumble in the paddock before yesterdays second race Young John vas scheduled to fulfill his engagements here this afternoon afternoonAs As for the Gen Duke situation Jones graciously dwelt at some length on the bruised left front heel that has given him and his father Ben Jones so many anxious moments during the past few days It ap ¬ pears as though this thing is dissolving itself now he said Its a deep bruise and there may not be any pusthefe at all Well probably see it as a red spot when the hoof grows out during the next few months Were using iodine and ether now to harden the hoof and we probably wont touch the bar shoe that we have on onThe The shoe incidentally with a felt pad between the plate and the hoof was set yesterday by Pat Hillock the Derby black ¬ smith who has shod the Joneses horses and other top stars for their most impor ¬ tant engagements over the past 20 years Jones denied that he had contacted a West Coast plater for special shoes and made it quite clear that Hillock was more than competent enough to take care of all his shoeing needs needsJones Jones took Gen Duke to the track short ¬ ly after 730 am this morning Exercise boy Joe Swartz was in the irons although jockey Willie Hartack was on the scene Jimmy and B A on ponies herded then indisposed warrior to the gap trailed by Dr Harthill and a sizable group of news ¬ men afoot Upon reaching the track Dr Harthill borrowed a pony from Odie Clel land and cantered off to check on the colts action as he jogged around this his ¬ toric oval ovalSideline Sideline spectators included newsreel and television cameramen and numerous other trainers of Derby candidates the majority of whom thought that Gen Duke seemed to be going sound Dr Harthill actually had a tougher time of it than Gdn Duke Odies pony apparently feeling frisky in the cool air ran off with the harassed veterinarian for a brief stretch but then settled down downAfter After jogging the equivalent of perhaps once around Gen Duke was returned to a field alongside his barn for a few min ¬ utes of grazing while Jones again turned his attention to an even larger crowd of turf writers If today was Saturday Jim ¬ my replied to one query he would not starb But we have 24 more hours which could mean a lot During the normal course of things when a horses foot hits the ground the hoof spreads slightly The bar shoe holds the hoof together and also ab ¬ sorbs some of the jarring action actionIn In recollection said Jones the colfc probably was hurt originally in the Florida Derby He was tender for a day or two after the race but then he seemed to come around again He didnt run his race at Keeneland but when we had him reshbd we thought we had the trouble cleared up upOther Other Highlights of Morning Period A hasty auto tour of Derby candidate f barns produced the following Tennessee Wright wrapped from ankle to neck in Army greatcoat said that lie would blow Shan Pac out a slow quarter 6f a mile on Saturday Trainer Johnny Nerud and owner Ralph Lowe are well satisfied with Gallant Mans condition Lowe who has never seen a Derby before is playing host to a crowd of Texans Gallant Man who worked an eyecatching half mile in 41 around two turns yesterday will complete his Derby training with a gallop tomorrow Trainer Milton Rieser thinks Federal Hill is at peak form as todays work and Tuesdays Trial seem to indicate The Cosmic Bomb colt likes cold weather and could be very dangerous in the Derby He doesnt have to be on the lead either ob ¬ served Riesers son Stanley a trainer in his own right Mister Jive galloped out six furlongs in a satisfactory 116 Co owner Verne Martin reports that Appel baum who has been ill is almost sure to be here tomorrow Mister Jive worked with a ring bit for the first time today and will wear it in the Derby It enables the rider to have better control of the colt who likes to run off after the pacemakers Round Table galloped this morning and will blow out through the stretch tomorrow Willie Molter is due from California with owner Travis Kerr tonight Bold Ruler had a slow gallop of a mile and onehalf this morning and his camp is very confident Eddie Arcaro arrives from New York to ¬ night and will have as his guest a Father Melton close friend of The Master and the Fitzsimmonses Better Bee galloped this morning and is attracting increasing sup ¬ port among newsmen here for part of the money on Saturday The son of Triplicate and S Bee bred like Count Fleet is prob ¬ ably tlie best looking colt in the race He stepped in a hole during the Trial yet came on again between horses to be third
