Trainers Jockeys Agree in General Consensus Points To Tough1 Race RaceBase Base Overall Derby Opinion On High Caliber of Field Typical Comments Quoted QuotedCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 The consensus of opinion among trainers and jockeys involved in the pro ¬ ceedings of tomorrows 83rd edition of the Kentucky Derby is that it will be an un ¬ usually tough race due to the overall high caliber of the field Some typical comments follow followTRAINERS TRAINERS TRAINERSMilton Milton Rieser Federal Hill I think Gallant Man and Round Table will be very tough If Bold Ruler runs with me we may both get beat I dont know if my colt will get a mile and a quarter on a dry track but if it rains hell go two miles milesJim Jim Fitzsimmons Bold Ruler Its a wide open race my horse is fit and Ill have no excuse if he loses I consider myself lucky that hes gotten this far farTester Tester R Tennessee Wright Shan Pac Bold Ruler Round Table and Gen Duke if hes right will probably be the horses to beat My horse comes from behind so I wouldnt mind a little mud to slow up the speed horses horsesDel Del Carroll Better Bee I think that the comefrombehind horses may have it a little better than the speed horses My horse is coming up the race in excellent form and I think we have a chance to get a piece of it itJimmy Jimmy Conway Indian Creek Bold Ruler is a rough customer and you cant write off Gen Duke if hes all right Sev ¬ eral of the others have really excellent chances too so it will be a tough race to win winBud Bud Carter Mister Jive Im not fa ¬ miliar with all the horses but I know that Bold Ruler and Gallant Man will be tough to handle They proved that in the Wood WoodJack Jack Williams Round Table This will be the toughest Derby Ive ever seen I can think of at least five horses who could win it If we get our kind of firm track we might be there thereJohnny Johnny Xerud Gallant Man He Hedoesnt doesnt want a real hard trackbut I think he can handle any other Off his breeding and the way he ran in the Wood Im not worried about the distance Bold Ruler may be the toughest toughestJimmy Jimmy Jones Gen Duke and Iron liege Theres not much I can say at this time because I dont know if Gen Duke will be able to make it However it should be a tough race because there are a lot of good horses running in it itJOCKEYS JOCKEYS JOCKEYSWillie Willie Shoemaker Gallant Man I i ode in the Wood Memorial have a lot of respect for Gallant Man and know he is a game horse I feel confident we will be challenging in the final drive driveEddie Eddie Arcaro Bold Ruler This one wont be easy Gallant Man Round Table Gen Duke if hes right and Bold Ruler are the ones to beat I feel and Im not too concerned about the others Willie Hartack Gen Duke I dont know how this horse will respond after his mishap but I can say that if he runs to his good form he will win it You can chart your race as you go along with him for he can run any way off the pace or on it And either way when you ask him to run hell deliver deliverDave Dave Erb Iron Liege This liorse can run any way you ask him He can go on the pace if you wish stay near it or stay off it Ill ride the Derby whatever way seems best as the race progresses progressesRalph Ralph Neves Round Table My horse will rate I expect to see Federal Hill take the lead and I figure to stay within strik ¬ ing distance early But Ive got a fast horse too and I might even be forced to the early lead I think Bold Ruler is the horse to beat and hell be the one Im most on the lookout for forWillie Willie Carstens Federal Hill This is a fast horse and a trifle hard to rate I dont know about Round Table and Bold Ruler but if I can rate this horse just a bit and save him a trifle while in front I know he will have a lot left for the drive Johnny Adams Better Bee Ive sized the race up and my strategy is simple Ill get a position within striking distance stay there until the right time to move and then well make a run for it to the wire Better Bee seems to race best from a bit off the pace but not too far off John Ralph Adams Shan Pa This is strictly a comefrombehind horse and that is our best chance to win Fll steady him early look for a clear path and ask him to make that one big run runGeorge George Taniguchi Indian Creek Ive got a good horse as I believe the Derby Trial proved He has enough early speed to get a position and from the way he fin ¬ ished in the Trial I believe he is game enough
