Vast Radio and TV Coverage of Derby DerbyCBS CBS to Coordinate Global Broadcast PreRace Color Part of Video Presentation PresentationBy By LEO M1SHKIN M1SHKINA A round the world radio audience of possibly several hundred million and a tel ¬ evision audience of at least 30000000 will be turned in today to the 83rd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs DownsThe The classic Run for the Roses will be carried by Columbia Broadcasting System on radio and television the former broad ¬ casting the race over the combined facil ¬ ities of the full CBS radio network in this country the Canadian Broadcasting Com ¬ pany north of the border and beamed to Latin America and overseas by both the Voice of America and the Armed Forces Radio network networkOn On television the Derby will be carried live by 180 CBSTV outlets with kine ¬ scopes and film recordings aired by other stations later on their regularly scheduled news and sports programs programsCapossela Capossela to Call Race RaceCalling Calling the race itself will be veteran sportscaster Fred Capossela Bryan Field with Phil Sutterfield of station WHAS TV Louisville will describe the color the pomp and the pageantry surrounding the event The radio and TV simulcast will be on the air from 415 to 430 pm CDT CDTPreceding Preceding the actual running of the Derby itself will be a Kentucky Derby Preview on CBSTV from 4 to 415 pm CDT with Brownie Leach publicity di ¬ rector at Churchill Downs acting as mod ¬ erator in a panel discussion of the back ¬ ground and history of the classic Also taking part in this preview will be sports writers Red Smith of New York Warren Brown of Chicago Morris McLemore of Miami and Bob Herbert of Los Angeles AngelesCBS CBS radio will also have its preview of the race from 245 to 3 pm CDT with Phil Sutterfield interviewing celebrities present at Churchill Downs for the occa ¬ sion and giving a review of the past his ¬ tory of the race raceLast Last Tuesday CBS radio also broadcast the Kentucky Derby Trial the famed pre ¬ liminary to todays event with Bryan Field calling the race and Sutterfield describing the surrounding color colorThere There will be four television cameras on hana to put the Derby on the air two on the roof of the grandstand one on the in ¬ field of the trackf and one indoors for the interviews and ceremonial events but also available to shoot through the windows for the running of the race raceFollowing Following the running of the Derby to ¬ day CBS will also cover the next two events of the Triple Crown the Preakness on May 18 from 4 30 to 5 pm CDT and the Belmont Stakes on June 15 from 330 to 4 pjn CDT CDTThe The television coverage will b produced by Judson Bailey CBSTV sports director and the radio broadcasts will be under the supervision of Jimmy Dolan CBS director of sports
