EDDIE ARCARO Arcaro Master of Rose Run Too Americas Premier Jockey Has Derby Record of Five Winners Making 18th Classic Start Today to Break Another of His Own Many Race Records RecordsBy By JOE HIRSCII HIRSCIICHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 In those magic moments of ap ¬ proaching dusk tomorrow when the horses file onto the track for the 83d running of the Kentucky Derby and a hushed crowd looks on intently as the band strikes up My Old Kentucky Home a great many important turf records will be up for re ¬ vision Few of these statistical monuments however will be more remarkable than the ones handcarved by a 41yearold jockey named George Edward Arcaro who is just as remarkable as his glittering achieve ¬ ments mentsLawrin Lawrin His First Winner in Race RaceNo No other rjder in American turf history has dominated the national racing scene as long or as completely as The Master whose name has been a symbol for Mthe best in his profession almost from the day he first got up at ThistleDown in Cleve ¬ land back in the summer of 1931 Consider for instance that this will be Arcaros 18th Derby an accomplishment that stands in stately isolation as does Eddies record of having won five previous renewals of the Run for the Roses RosesLawrin Lawrin 1938 Whirlaway 1941 Hoop Jr 1945 Citation 1948 and Hill Gail 1952 all finished first in Americas Blue Ribband of the Turf under the strong yet sensative hands of the tall for a jock muscular graceful Arcaro Only Isaac Murphy and Earle Sande cast a shadow of any comparable length they each rode three winners in the Churchill Downs classic classicIts Its also interesting to note that Arcaros luck hasnt always been good in the Derby Eleven of his 17 mounts were favorites and it is conceded in many professional circles that circumstances of one kind or another cost him victories in 1942 when he had his choice of Greentrees Devil Diver or Shut Out and picked the former where the latter won and again in 1947 when he was boxed in with Phalanx probably the best horse in the race who still closed furiously to be second a head to Jet Pilot PilotHowever However Arcaros career has been dotted by so many highlights as to make a few bad moments in the Derby of little conse ¬ quence Consider these souvenirs Leading money winning rider six times a record Leading stakeswinning jockey 10 times a record Only rider to win the Triple Crown twice Rider of five Preaknes winners a arecord record Rider of seven Belmont Stakes winners winnersa a record Winner of 40 stakes events in 1952 1952a a record Alltime money winning rider with 21000334 through the 1956 season There are many others These will suffice to underline the merit of Eddies universally acknowledged nickname of The Master In a business where great success is fre Continued on Page SOD Arcaro Master of Rose Run Too Has Derby Marie Of Five Winners WinnersMaking Making 18th Classic Start Today to Break Another of His Own Many ability by horsemen officials and the press and held in deep admiration and affection by his colleagues many of whom he has helped not only as President of the Jockeys Guild but as a human being beingThoroughly Thoroughly gregarious Eddie loves com ¬ pany of every kind and is usually sur ¬ rounded by a crowd wherever he travels Hes highly intelligent an excellent speak ¬ er with a sharp sense of humor and is a thoroughly pleasant person to be around Fond of Morning Golf GolfHe He is particularly fond of his morning round of golf and as is the case in the afternoons when the chips are down hes tough to beat for a bet of any kind He can shoot in the low 70s when pressed He is most relaxed over a friendly glass of scotch and inevitibly the talk turns to racing where Eddie can discuss every phase with great facility and authority authorityAn An astute business man Arcaro has a wide variety of investments in securities oil and property of one kind or another He also owns a sizable saddlery business with factories in England and makes oc ¬ casional trips abroad both on business and pleasure Most recently he was in France where last fall he rode C V Whitneys Career Boy in the Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp LongchampFor For his chief rival tomorrow Willie Har tack Arcaro has a good deal of respect The kid has improved tremendously over the past year Eddie told a reporter in New York recently Hes got all the con ¬ fidence in the world and is riding in top form Hes not afraid to take a horse back now and knows that a good horse will give him a big run when he asks for it if hs handles him right Eddie also gets quite a kick out of the sometimesbrash Hartack who likes to needle him a little much aa Casey Stengel enjoys the antics of the boisterous Billy Martin MartinAt At 41 Arcaro is no boy and admits that he finds it tough to take a vacation be ¬ cause its getting harder and harder to get fit once again after a long layoff However Eddie is in excellent physical condition and paces himself carefully He says he wanta to continue riding as long as he gets the top mounts and theres no reason why he shouldnt enjoy another five or six good years Now as has been the case for the past 20 years when a man has a top horse he still thinks of Arcaro first when it comes to a major stake and with good reason Eddie is the greatest money rider of all time
