WILLIAM VEENEMAN Veeneman Saw First Derby in 1913 Has Seen Ail Since Donerails Triumph TriumphChurchill Churchill Board Chairman Devotes Time to Breeding And Racing Thoroughbreds Thoroughbredsr r CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 William H Veeneman chairman of the board at Churchill Downs saw his first Derby in 19i3 the longest shot in Derby history Donerail and he has not missed a Derby since sinceUntil Until 14 years ago however the Veene ¬ man interest in racing was that of a keen andavid spectator and patron but came the day he decided to retire from his ma ¬ jor business interests the Frankfort Dis ¬ tilleries and lie sold out and switched liis main career to something he always had wanted to do race and breed a lew thoroughbreds thoroughbredsDont Dont get the idea that Veenemanactu ally is retired for he maintains a dozen corporate directorships including being chairman of the board of one of the largest banks in the South and he keeps two secretaries busy with dictation but even so he still has lots of time to devote to racing racingBecame Became Chairman on Winns Death DeathA A substantial shareholder in Churchill Downs he was elected a director about 10 years ago and upon the death of Col Matt J Winn was elevated to chairman It was Veeneman who recommended that the post of executive vice president be created and again recommended that Stanley P Hug enberg be appointed to that post It was so decreed and while Veenemans advice is sought on many occasions during the course of the year he has divested himself from any operation activity excepting to help formulate high policy policyShortly Shortly after the Churchill Downs meet ¬ ing Veeneman and his charming wife a lover of horses too will depart on a tour of Japan Australia and other parts of the Orient and upon completion of thajt trip the Veenemans will be able to say they have1 been everywhere in the world with the exception of course of such remote places as McMurdo Sound in the Anarctic And everywhere they travel they go racing Indeed we dare say they have visited more race tracks and seen racing under more varied conditions than perhaps any other couple in America AmericaThe The Veenemans had a Derby starter once themselves this being BlackGeorge who won the Derby Trial in 1950 but who was unplaced to Middleground Hill Prince and Mr Trouble the following Saturday SaturdayWhile While they have never owned more than a few mares they did have one tremendous year raising three thoroughbreds Dean Cavey Happy Carrier and Mr Good and all three became good stakes winners winnersWhile While another Derby spectacle always thrills the Veenemans perhaps they derive their greatest pleasure with their connec ¬ tion with Churchill Downs and its Derby when in far corners of the world Cairo Morrocco Athens Vienna Santiago Chile or you name it the people they meet all know all about the Kentucky Derby
