GALLANT MAN ff 5 g i Gallant ManSprinter or Solid B Router Derby Today Holds Key to His Future FutureMigoii Migoii Sire of Imported Lowe Colt Was Stayer as Is His Offspring to Date DateCertainly Certainly one of the big questions pon ¬ dered as Kentucky Derby post time draws near is whether Gallant Man is a sprinter or stayer That Ralph Lowes colt is for ¬ midable enough to merit such discussion was clearly outlined by his thrilling but noseshy duel with Bold Ruler in the mile and oneeighth Wood Memorial two weeks ago s sThat That however was Gallant Mans first effort at anything beyond seven furlongs He had already demonstrated that he could hold his own in the sprints with the best of his division but the question remains Is he a solid router routerA A clue to Gallant Mans potential over a distance may be found in his pedigree which is not likely to be too familiar to American turf goers Gallant Man was bred in England by the Aga Khan and Aly Khan who later sold him to his present owner The bay colt is by Migoii out of the Mahmoud mare Majidah MajidahMigoii Migoii Retired to Stud in 1949 Migoii a top class racer in England from 1946 through 1948 was retired to the stud at five in 1949 Only a handful of his off ¬ spring have raced in this country Migoii was a proven router nad since his sons and daughters have come to the races they too have shown a preference for a route As a matter of fact the average distance of races won by Migolis offspring is just slightly less than the Kentucky Derby route of 10 furlongs according to figures compiled by British breeding au ¬ thorities thoritiesMigoii Migoii bred by the Aga Khan is by Bois Roussell out of the gray Mah Iran Migoii himself is a gray As a twoyear old he raced five times winning the seven furlongs Dewhurst Stakes and running third in the New Stakes at Ascot He developed into one of the top threeyear olds in Britain in 1947 with six victories one second and a third in eight starts startsHis His outstanding scores that year were in the mile and a half King Edward VIL Stakes at Ascot the mile and a quarter Eclipse Stakes at Newmarket the mile and 9 quarter Champion Stakes at Sandown Park and the mile and fiveeighths Ain tree Derby He defeated Tudor Minstrel by a length and a half in the Eclipse and turned back Nirgal in the Champion Stakes StakesIn In the classic Epsom Derby Migoii ran second to Pearl Diver and was ahead of Sayajirao Tudor Minstrel and 11 others at the wire while in the St Leger Stakes a gruelling route test of almost a mile and seven furlongs he was third to Saya jirao and Arbar ArbarHis His other victories in 1947 were in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket and the Royal Stakes at Manchester ManchesterHaving Having already proved his ability to go a route Migoii added to his prowess as a stayer as a fouryearold in 1948 crossing the Channel to capture the mile and a half Prix de LArc de Triomphe at Longchamp with Nirgal second and Bey the French Derby winner that year third In seven other starts that season he won the White Rose Stakes Great Midland Breeders Plate and the Rose of York Sweepstakes SweepstakesTrying Trying for consecutive doubles in the Eclipse and Champion Stakes he finished fourth on both occasions in 1948 but was only beaten a neck in the mile and a half Coronation Cup and only a neck and a length StakesHe to be third in the Ormonde Stakes He needed no more races to prove that he was a genuine stayer and was retired to stud in 1949 He has since sired more than 30 winners Oddly his offspring who have raced in Europe have inherited Migolis routerunning ability while the average distance of races won by the halfdozeff or so of his progeny who have been im ¬ ported to the United States including Gal ¬ lant Man is just over six furlongs furlongsInto Into what category Gallant Man will fall sprinter or stayer remains to be seen The answer should come in the Derby It would appear however that Migolis influ ¬ ence should not handicap him at the Der ¬ by route
