Connors Corner Eyes of Turf World Centered On Derby at Churchill Today TodayBy By C J CONNORS CONNORSJ J JAMAICA L I N Y May 3 Naturally the Kentucky Derby takes over the spbtlight Saturday but racing will as usual be conducted at Jamaica and other racing nters in the nation Jamaica offers the Bed o Roses as the featured number of the eightrace program and with favorable weather conditions a large crowd is expected There was a scarcity of training moves at the various Long Island tracks this morning and work watchers pro ¬ nounced the period as one of the slowest onrecord This can be ascribed to the sudden drop in tne temperature the mercury dipped to below the 40 mark which is rather unusual for the merry month of May Anyway Aqueduct reported that 15 horses were breezed over that oval while Jamaica and Belmont were also on the slow side While on the subject of lack of workouts at Aqueduct another situation developed there this morning that could have some effect on the construction schedule The house wreckers and truckers were missing they are reported to have gone fishing while a new contract is being negotiated The rubble from the demolition is piling up steadily but track superintendent Lennie Utwak after a survey of the situation pointed out that no delays of a serious nature will develop The steelworkers have razed more than 75 per cent of the grandstand and are now working on the clubhouse section of the building This portion Litwak estimates will be taken down in two weeks or so soFollowing Following this phase of the program the new construction will get under way but just what will be started first is something that the engineers and contractors will de ¬ termine Anyway the work is moving along steadily and that is that The small fields at Jamaica are something that has the Paddock Gang membership at sea They I have examined every facet of the situation and cannot come up with sensible answers answersQuestion Question Shelved by Members MembersThere There are all types of horses on hand not so many of the top performers they will admit but sufficient to fill a condition race every now and then Anyway the membership shelved the question and de ¬ cided that the paucity of starteYs is some ¬ thing that owners and trainers can be held responsible The lattter on the other hand state that many of the conditions do not fit their charges and thus the arguments roll along at a merry clip clipI I J Collins the Lancaster Ohio patron was a brief visitor He witnessed several races and then planed out to Louisville Ky for theDerby Harry Heiman the Utica N Y owner was on hand yesterday for some racing He has several horses with Kay Jensen Max Gluck of Elmdorf planed out to Los Angeles on a business mission He will return to these parts later in the month Bobby Smahters of the local secretarial staff who was injured in an auto collision the other morning is resting comfortably at Mary Immaculate hospital The doctors following examina ¬ tion of the Xray pictures reported that no fracture of the skull was noticeable and that his condition is improving improvingGeorge George and Julia Odom were on hand The visit was her first of the season Alfred Decozen was a surprise visitor dur ¬ ing the afternoon Ben A Jones general manager of Calumet Farm declared Bards town and Fabius from the Grey Lag Bardstown was turned out for a rest while Jones js of the opinion that Fabius is none too partial to the Jamaica footing Gray Phantom from the Wheatley Stable will be returned from Garden State follow ¬ ing the running of the featured offering at that track on Saturday SaturdayEddie Eddie Kilroe planed out for Louisville last night to witness the running of the Derby The division of the Cain Hoy Stable now at Louisville will be shipped to Belmont Park over the weekend The shipment will include the Oaks starters and the withdrawals from the Derby Jockey Benny Sorensen checked out for Garden State to fill engagements Saturday at that track Trainer Rabbit Dabson was all en ¬ thused yesterday when he reported that Nances Ace had foaled a colt at his Ever ¬ glades Farm in south Florida The arrival of the colt in the opinion of Dabson is something of a world record for it marked the seventh successive colt foaled by the daughter of Case Ace Furthermore Dab son stated that in the past two breeding seasons not a filly foal arrived at Ever ¬ glades Farm The newcomer is a three quarters brother to Nances Lad Dur ¬ ing the absence of trainer Johnny Nerud his New York starters are saddled by his assistant Andy Midosch
