CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky I May 3 LoriEl proclaimed Herself a gen ¬ uine stayer before a shrilling Derby Eve crowd of 20500 this sundrenched after ¬ noon as she drove to a deserved success in the 83rd running of the 42350 Kentucky Oaks Jockey Lois C Cook drove the Soto and Berke filly to the end of this distin ¬ guishing mile and onesixteenth four em ¬ phatic lengths in advance of Hal Priqe Headleys Oaks Prep heroine Pillow Talk as the latter in turri led Moss and Nolans Dales Delight two lengths for the second award The unexpected Woodlawn finished a desultory fourth among a field of a doz ¬ en of the seasons better threeyearold fillies The successful LoriEl who had been third competing with colts in the Arkansas Derby earned a gross prize of 30700 and a net of 29700 while returning her scat ¬ tered backers 1280 She skipped the dis ¬ tance in fast going in 144 144Nile Nile Lily Began to Tire TireThis This latest Kentucky Oaks winner gave a performance leaving little either to the imagination or to be desired simply peg gin Nile Lilys pace to the head of the stretch where the Roman filly was glad to call it an afternoon then drawing out un ¬ der continued pressure While nothing may be taken from LoriElls performance it ought in justice to the Ashland winner Jota Jota be stressed that she experienced rather a rough trip Breaking from number 11 she and Andersdn were forced wide on the first turn then after making up many lengths as her running mate Nile Lily stopped on the last turn she was impeded when Pamper Me swerved before her The Guggenheim fillies and the Headley and Hunter entry shared the bulk of support in the tote toteFollowing Following the result of this filly special LoriEls Chicago owners appeared in the winners enclosure and received the trophy emblematic of her success from the hands of Lt Gov Harry Lee Waterfield LoriEl a 700 bargain yearling for Mike Soto who later sold an interest to A E Berke carried her weight 121 pounds in the Oaks and was within fourfifths of a second of Aris Monas track and stakes record Soto who also trains LoriEl and has nomi ¬ nated her for a number of Chicago stakes is a diamond cutter cutterThere There really isnt much to say of the running except that we are afraid it again exposed Nile Lily as fast ljut low on stamina and the winner ao a hardhitting customer up to middle distances at least She just followed Nile Lily in second place to the hot corner where she took over without meeting much resistance then continued on unchallenged while kept do ¬ ing her utmost the final quarter quarterJota Jota Jota Has Tough Luck LuckPillow Pillow Talk picking up weight off the prep was strategically placed in third posi ¬ tion to the Stretch where she virtually fell heiress to the place as Nile Lily stopped Behind these three the distinguished Jota Jota was confronted with insurmountable difficulties and the others were never se ¬ riously runningIn concerned with the running In the fifth race a dozen threeyearolds were marshaled postward for this affair and when the rust had settled M A Moss and T D Nolans little esteemed Toms Song was the winner by a length and one quarter at the direct expense of H H Mundys Cosmic Victory who was ridden by Willie Hartack and ruled a staunclr choice choiceA A length and onehalf farther back C P Edwards Jrs Storiful finished third just in advance of Harvest Moon Toms Song re ¬ turned a thumping 2820 for 2 in the tote market and completed the trip in 125 in footing accurately described as fast though the Downs thus far this spring has been less speed conducive than in past years yearsThis This was the fourth start of the 57 cam ¬ paign for Toms Song an outsize Greek Song gelding who had been beaten off racing at a higher appraisal during the Hialeah meeting Jockey Ralph Borge menke gave him the benefit of thoughtful handling here Among the trailers early he worked his way forward on the outside until he was perfectly placed to challenge on the outside straightening for the run home At this juncture Cosmic Victory was several lengths in front having disposed of Bonded Treat and looked all over a winner She chucked it when Hartack placed her to pressure the final furlong however Storiful ran the same steady sort Continued n P ftrry7 LoriEl Wins Kentucky Oaks By Four Over Pillow Talk TalkContinued Continued from Page Seven Sevenof of race she showed back at Keeneland to finish third without ever looking like beat ¬ ing the winner One of the most interesting of the Oaks supporting events was a sixfurlong affair for maiden threeyearold fillies which drew a field of eight including several of negligible racing experience but high breeding One of these was Harry Guggen ¬ heims firsttime starter Full Flower a neat bay daughter of Ambiorix out of the j Fairway mare Celaeno who shared fa voritism with Wilton Stables Euphony It resolved into a virtual match despite the fact Full Flower broke greenly her saddle slipped and she was lengths last going up the backstretch while Euphony was dis ¬ couraging the others othersMaking Making up ground while skirting the field on the run Full Flower detached her ¬ self from the group and set sail for Euphony coming to the furlong pole De ¬ spite racing unprofessionally in the drive she continued to close to the finish where Euphony led her by a rapidly diminishing length and onequarter in 112 It was a tough one to lose S I Crews Commo Lady was an unobtrusive third Euphony returned 580 in the tote and was ridden by WUlie Hartack HartackT T Alie Grissoms Big Winner a rather wellbred toppy chestnut son of Prince quillo and Winning Bid dusted off 11 other twoyearolds racing with a price on their heads in the four and onehalf fur ¬ longs of the first race J B Adams econ ¬ omized a lot of ground along on the rails with this colt who proved to have too many guns for Odie Clellands filly Condi Lu and Jacob Shers highly fancied Marys Boy in a skirmish in the upper stretch He eventually won by a length and onequar ¬ ter in 53 four lengths separating the filly from Marys Boy and returned a rousing 1620 in the tote In the seven furlongs of the second event E A Bischoffs gray filly Trust in Me second choice to Clifton Road im ¬ posed her will on eight other 2500 sprint ¬ ers Always close up under jockey Rosers confident handling while Seasons Son set the early pace supplanted by Clifton Road on the turn the On Trust filly en ¬ gaged Clifton Road in a headandhead duel through the stretch and won a well earned purse Clifton Road had drawn on all the resources at his command trying to repel Trust in Me and Alert Boy beat him for the place The winner paid 940 and was timed in 127
