STATE PARK Camden N J May 3 Garden State Park on Saturday brings a return of thoroughbred racing to the state of New Jersey with a spring meeting of 25 days The 16th day at this track will be launched with the 16th run Handicap Calumet Farms Fabius heads a surprisingly large field of 15 horses named overnight making the gross value of the Valley Forge 31200 of which 22 450 will be awarded to the winner in the event that there are no withdrawale withdrawaleFabius Fabius must shoulder 124 pounds which is from eight to 16 more than assigned to his rivals closest of whom are Mrs M Erlangers Rasper II Arthur H Bowens Fabricator Brookfield Farms Impromptu and Wheatley Stables Gray Phantom King Ranchs Beam Rider is lightly weighted at 110 pounds but he will at ¬ tract considerable support from his recent second in the Excelsior Handicap if he makes the overnight van trip here from New York YorkNo No rider was assigned on Fabius when Jimmy Jones called to make the entry frpm Louisville Ky this morning but the Calumet trainer stated that he intended to start the fouryearold son of Citation and Shameen as long as the track remains fast At present writing there does not appear to be a rain cloud in sight sightRasper Rasper II at 112 Pounds PoundsClosest Closest in the weights to Fabius is Rasper H with 112 pounds and he will be ridden by David Gorman Arthur Bowen named Roger LeBlanc as the rider for Fabricator but he also said it was doubtr ful that his colt would be a starter The son of Johns Joy came out of the Laurel Handicap with cuts and nicks and Bowen will decide in the morning if he is suffi ¬ ciently recovered Joe Culmone is named to ride Impromptu while no boy was as ¬ signed to Imagem coupled with Im ¬ promptu as the Brookfield Farm entry entryFabius Fabius won the Jersey Stakes here as a threeyearold last spring to be the lead ¬ ing money earner of the meeting His tri ¬ umphs last season also included the Preakness He finished second to Needles in the Kentucky Derby was third in the Belmont Stakes and finished second in the Ohio Derby He completed his sophomore campaign finishing fourth in the Arling ¬ ton Classic and in the Sheridan Handicap both races at Chicago ChicagoLast Last winter Fabius assumed a position alongside his stablemate Bardstown as an outstanding handicap performer He began the winter by finishing a bangup fourth at six furlongs won the six f urlongs Armed Handicap his next start then finished fourth in the nine furlongs Appleton Handicap That race incidentally was won for Calumet by Bardstown His last start was in the mile and onequarter Gulf stream Park Handicap on March 23 Bardstown was the winner by a onehalf length and Fabius finished second carry ¬ ing 123 pounds and going easily behind his running mate mateFabius Fabius has been training steadily since his arrival at Garden State Last Wednes ¬ day he breezed a halfmile in 49 That was preceded by two sixfurlong workouts both in 114 which may or may not be suffi ¬ cient preparation for the strenuous task of giving away so much weight to so many rivals Saturday SaturdayRasper Rasper n has not started since April 10 at Laurel when he convincingly beat Cedrus at equal weights The latter re ¬ turned to win last Saturdays Laurel Handi ¬ cap defeating Colin MacLeod Jrs Bes omer by a nose The latter is entered to compete here Saturday at 112 pounds and will be ridden by Nick Shuk ShukSpeed Speed is the forte of Rasper n a five yearold son of Owen Tudor who was bred in England He managed five victories in 10 starts for his first season hi the United States last year although failing in the three stakes races he competed Prior to his victory at Laurel he finished a respect ¬ able fifth to Third Brother and Dedicate in the Bowie Handicap after having set the pace into the stretch He started his cur ¬ rent campaign with a triumph at six fur ¬ longs longsFabricator Fabricator performed below par in the Laurel Handicap last Saturday but he is a capable colt when at his best His two triumphs this season came in an allowance race at Tropical Park and the seven fur ¬ longs Southern Maryland Handicap at Bowie BowieThe The field appears to be replete with speed horses the most prominent being Rasper n Impromptu and Tellarian the latter responsible for forcing the pace in the Ex ¬ celsior Handicap last Saturday Fabius himself has ample early foot and should be f orwardly placed if he breaks well from his gate position midway of the field fieldBeam Beam Rider is considered to be at his best in the mud or on soft footing such as the deep course at Jamaica last Saturday when he finished a strong secondto Mid afternoon in the Excelsior No rider was named for the fouryearold son of Poised and he is considered among the doubtful starters
