Oh Johnny Charges Up From Far Back To Take Sutphin Handicap at Jamaica Victory Is First of Season For Gilroy Representative Place Award to New Holland HollandJAMAICA JAMAICA L L N Y May 3 Charging up from a distant last at the halfmile pole Mrs Wallace Gilroy s distancerunning Oh Johnny scored his first victory of the year in todays featured Sutphin Handicap at six furlongs Hedley Woodhouse steered the fouryearold bay son of Johns Joy to the wire a length and a half before Jacques D Wimpfheimers New Holland who led Kes wick Stables Informant Jay a half length Edward Siravos Pine Echo the oddson choice with the crowd of 20628 finished eight lengths out of the money in fourth place Oh Johnny who had been unplaced in three starts in Florida during the winter and had not startedsince January 26 paid 1390 and carried his top weight of 122 pounds over the six tiring panels in 112 Vs Last year Yorkie McLeods charge had won the Fountain of Youth Withers and Travers and gotten a piece of the prize in 10 other stakes but had not sprinted in more than a year yearInformant Informant hooked up with the favored Pine Echo leaving the gate and the pair drew several lengths away before Singer and New Holland in the opening quarter while Oh Johnny dropped back to last place some seven lengths behind the lead ¬ ers ersInformant Informant eventually cooked Pine Echo and opened a two lengths lead in the upper stretch while Woodhouse steered Oh John ¬ ny up on the rail and began to rouse the ultimate winner However Pine Echo was still in second place at the furlong pole followed by New Holland with Oh Johnny another length and a half back While Oh Johnny continued to storm up along the rail New Holland swung to the outside and may have even had his nose in front for a stride or two as he passed Informant Oh Johnny ran past New Hol ¬ land and Informant at the sixteenth pole as though they were rooted and was actual ¬ ly in hand as he sped under the wire The deep tiring track undoubtedly helped the distancerunning colt as it undoubtedly was the downfall of his speedier but less powerf ul rivals rivalsComing Coming from behind with a long sus ¬ tained run Brookmeade Stables Floral Park scored a popular victory in the Free port Purse reaching the wire three lengths before Ralph Lowes Fleurlea who led C T Chenerys Next Day another four lengths Colonnade Farms Mabe Gee was a length and onehalf out of the money after vying for the lead with Fleurlea to the head of the stretch Albert Schwizer rode Floral Park who paid 510 and was clocked in 147 147Foxcatcher Foxcatcher Farms Lopar a juvenile bay daughter of Heliopolis who wheeled at the start of her recent debut scored an upset in the fifth event looping the leaders at the final turn and drawing out to triumph by six lengths over Ellis Farms Countess Marcy who led A J Meslers Tutor by al ¬ most a length It was another four lengths back to Wheatley Stables Beguiling Lopar came on the track wearing rundown bandages but one of them came lot se en route to the post and both were removed before the Start Eric Guerin rode the win ¬ ner who paid 1670 and was teletimed in 100 for the five furlongs furlongsRollin Rollin W MettlerS Millden was liter ¬ ally unsaddled before the finish of the fourth event which he won by a head over Joseph Marrones El Hawa who led Mill River Stables heavily favored Octagonal by another head The saddle slipped 6n Millden at the end of a little more than a quarter mile and jockey Conn Errico had all he could do to stay atop the Slam Bang gelding He jode back after the race with the saddle in his hand After the race Eric Guerin who rode Octagonal claimed foul against the winner for bearing out against him in the stretch but the patrol films showed that the favor ¬ ite came in almost as much as his rival bore out Had Millden been disqualified it would have nullified a remarkable riding feat on the part of Errico and awarded the purse to a horse that was in no way both ¬ ered Millden paid 11 and stepped the six furlongs in 113
