i iNew New England By Fred Galhni Larry Adams Appears Cinch for Riding Title Wmant PresentftLeader Has Shoulder Injury Imported Garde Royale at Beattie Nursery NurseryLINCOLN LINCOLN DOWNS Lincoln R I May 3 Unless he falls on his matinee idol head or incurs the wrath of the stewards via the suspension route Larry Adams is a cinch to wind up leading rider at the meeting Going into Fri ¬ days races the Adonislike Adams was only a single winner be ¬ hind Dick Winant and far ahead of the rest of his rivals Winant was rendered hors de combat with a shoulder injury which has him presently in Physicians Hospital in Jamaica L I N Y Thus Adams who is under contract to Bill Rodgers the North Reading horseman who is also the leading trainer by a wide margin has the field practically locked up upAdams Adams was born in New Orleans La in 1936 then lived for about 10 years in Bogalusa When he was about 15 years old the family returned to the city that care forgot locating not more than five blocks from the Fair Grounds What else is a kid going to do in the mornings where theres a race track around It wasnt long before he was hanging around in the morn ¬ ings and Frank Dirl who had the track kitchen took him in tow Dirl got Adams a job with H K Stevens up in Lexington Ky and for a couple of years Adams spent his time breaking yearlings and getting the usual groundwork in the necessary rudiments preparatory to being a rider Later Larry went to work for Gary C Boshamer at the textile magnates farm in Clover S C All this time he has yet to hit a race track Finally in the fall of 1952 he went home to New Orleans and the Fair Grounds GroundsSent Sent to Scarborough for Seasoning SeasoningIt It was there that he met Rodgers the latter hiring Adams and the pair have proved to be a powerful combination the last couple of years Rodgers gave Larry his start at booting and the blueeyed blonde youngster first swung across a saddle in a race on August 8 1954 at Narragansett He beat one horse he recalls He had one more race at Gansett then was sent up to Scarborough Downs for some experience which he acquired insome 36 races With that school ¬ ing he returned to Suffolk Downs and on October 4 broke his maiden on Adearishe As a matter qf fact Adams may have set some sort of a record that day for he also won on Time for Speed those being his only mounts of the afternoon Its a rare thing for a rider to win with his only mount the day he breaks his maiden maidenSince Since then Adams has improved tremendously and is one of the best riders on the grounds as his record attestsRoughly he has won close to 300 races in about two years of riding As one might have gathered Adams is a handsome chap but so far he lias eluded matri ¬ monial minded girls His extracurricular activities in ¬ clude water skiing and record collecting At the moment he has his 100horse powered speedboat in Miami waters but is bringing it up here for the summer months We are well aware of Adams penchant f or water skiing first hand A couple of years agjo we bor ¬ rowed Adams shortened skis for a spin arid almost wound up drowning Anything for a laugh In the record field he esjchews rock and roll and leans toward progressive jazz His mother sister and brother live in Pasadena Calif which he calls home although he seldom makes it except for short trips Only one thing is bothering Larry now if he does win the riding title here Last year the top jock won a Citroen automobile donated by the management but this year the meet ¬ ings kingpin rider will have to be content with just the glory a Citroen would be just what Adams needs He could put it in the trunk of his big new Cadillac Take it away champ champYankeeland Yankeeland Breeding Gets a Boost BoostW W J
