Reports From Foreign Racing Centers Argentina Cara Palida Hears San Isidro Record By HUGH LYALL LYALLOur Our Buenos Aires Correspondent BUENOS AIRES Argentina There seems to be little doubt now as to the qual ¬ ity of the flying twoyearold Cara Palida He is definitely in the extra class Over six furlongs n the Old Man classic at San Isidro Saturday he ran away with the race in 1 09 which is just one fifth of a second above the track record for the distance How good his performance was may be gauged from the fact that last year Chaton won the same race by a neck from Holandes XL in 111 On both occasions the state of the going was normal normalOnce Once again New Deal occupied second place but whereas in the Santiago Luro classic he got within a length of the bay son of Claro he was beaten three lengths Saturday Cara Palidas victories have been gained on top of the ground and in the mud by impressive margins and in excellent time Moreover he likes racing and approaches his task with the air of an equine aristocrat Away he goes when the tapes are raised and that is just the end of the face He is quite a picture and experts find it difficult to fault him al ¬ though some exception has been taken to his neck which is on the small side sideMany Many of the highpriced youngsters from the last sales are still due to make their maiden appearance and only infrequently does early twoyearold form stand up to the stress of a full seasons racing But from time to time there are exceptions and Cara Palida may prove good enough to take on all comers at least until the dis ¬ tances lengthen out He is winning far too easily and in much too good time to be in any danger from average opposition over the shorter distances Apart from New Deal who again ran well there is no ne ¬ cessity to mention the others which fin ¬ ished behind Cara Palida they were so far away they did not enter into the photos photosThere There was one other feature of the San Isidro meeting which calls for men ¬ tion four favorites won during the aft ¬ ernoon Unfortunately except in the case of Be Sure 630 for two in the final race dividends were on the low side Cara Palidas backers for example only cashed in at the rate of 230 for two At Palermo Sunday there was a return to normal only two of the eight favorites were successful although there were no sensational dividends and in nearly every case the winner was a wellsupported rival to the favorite favoriteThe The Aituro R Bullricli classic 10 fur ¬ longs for mares was the feature and it provided a fairly easy victory for Niara a recent comer to local racing A daughter of Royal Tip out of Nayade she is a full sister of Nogoya who was well above the average and the remarkable thing is that until re ¬ cently she was never seen on either of the Metropolitan tracks She was taken to dis ¬ tant Cordoba and won her maiden race there over five furlongs She won three more races and was brought down to Pa ¬ lermo at the end of March She ran and won a modest race over eleven furlongs and was then entered for Sundays classic classicHer Her principal opponent Sunday was La Maravilla from whom she was receiving weight for age approximately 14 pounds Popular opinion was divided be ¬ tween them but when the final betting figures were posted it was seen that Niara was favorite with La Maravilla second in demand They finished in that order When the tapes were released La Maravilla went into the lead followed by Niara and Rama Caida They ran in that order until the home stretch was reached and then Rama Caida died away beaten La Maravilla held a two lengths lead but Niara was going the better of the two and opposite the official stands got up with the leader and went on to win handily by one and a half lengths Singaluz was a long way behind third while Rama Caida who had been so prominent in the early stages finished last Time 203 The going was on the heavy side following morning rain Niara has now six victories and one defeat to her credit creditStock Stock by Strand Congreve out of Sunuladora won the race for twoyear old colts over seven furlongs by three and onehalf lengths from Bastimento with the debutante Stuart another two lengths away third Main interest in the race lies in the fact that it called atten ¬ tion once again to the unfairness of mutuel betting when horses are heavily supported Stock returned those who backed him for a place the exact amount they invested Stuarts backers were sim ¬ ilarly rewarded and supporters of Basti ¬ mento earned ten centavos centavosInasmuch Inasmuch as there were nine runners it cannot be said that anyone other than the racing authorities did well out of the race It is a basic principle of gambling that if you cannot win you canndt lose But that does not work out here On a heavy course anything might happen your horse might fall downxor get knocked down or left at the post or disqualified And then you lose your investment Why then should you not win a cent if you have guessed correctly The official take of 25 per cent here makes it difficult to bet with profit
