Calumet Out to Tie OneTwo Record RecordCitation Citation Goal town Pulled Hat Trick in 48 Bradley Grand Slams in 21 and 26 v vCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 Calumet Farm which already holds the record of owning more Derby winners five than any other stable will try to equal a longstanding owners mark for the Derby Saturday with its powerful entry of Gen Duke and Iron Liege This unique almost forgotten record is held by the late Col E R Bradley who on two occasions sent out a twohorse entry in the Derby and saw his colors come flying home onetwo each time timeCalumetFarm CalumetFarm has accomplished this un ¬ usual feat once before with Citation and Coaltown in 1948 Now the establishment of Mrs Gene Markey bids to tie Colonel Bradleys record in tomorrows Run for the Roses RosesColonel Colonel Bradley who was master of the famed Idle Hour Stock Farm turned this grand slam in 1921 and 1926 In 1921 his entry of Behave Yourself and Black Servant finished heads apart and five years later Bubbling Over and Bagenbag gage ran onetwo S SThe Ross Slam in 1919 The Derby grand slam actually has been accomplished four times Commander J K L Ross preceding Colonel Bradley and Calumet in 1919 In that year Commander Ross had two outstanding runners in Sir Barton and Billy Kelly and they finished in that order orderIncidentally Incidentally the closest any other stable ever came to turning the trick was in 1893 and 1902 In 1893 the Gushing Orth entry of Lookout and Boundless fin ¬ ished onethree being split by Bashford Manor Stables Plutus The only other en ¬ try to finish onethree was T C McDow ¬ ells pair of AlanADale and The Rival who were separated at the wire by T W Moores Inventor InventorOn On two occasions too entries ran two three Ed Corrigans Huron and Phil Dwy er finished behind Bashford Manors Azra in 1892 and C R Ellisons Lady Navarre and James Reddjck were turned back by George J Longs Sir Huron in 1906 1906Commander Commander Ross Sir Barton and Billy Kelly were highly regarded in the 1919 edition of the Derby but J W CcClellands entry of Sailor and Eternal was the betting favorite at 21 to 10 while the eventual winners were held at 13 to 5 But Sir Bar ¬ ton took the lead at the outset under John ¬ ny Lof tus and romped home five lengths before his stablemate who under Earl San de gamely took th place by a length frcin the outsider Under Tire TireBradley Bradley Entry Almost 9tol 9tolIt It was entirely different kind of race when Colonel Bradleys Behave Yourself and Black Servant took all the honors in 1921 The Bradley entry was lightly re ¬ garded at almost 9 to 1 while H P Whit ¬ neys entry of Prudery and Tryster was the strong choice at 11 to 10 Black Servant made the pace for the first mile with Be ¬ have Yourself fell back in the pack In the stretch however Behave Yourself drew up to his stablemate and these two put on a thrilling headlandhead duel the length of the home lane the former prevailing by a head at the wire six lengths clear of the Prudery and Tryster who finished threefour In 1926 Colonel Bradleys Bubbling Over and Bagenbaggage were the favorites at 1910 this Btime racing in the name of Idle Hour Stock Farm The race was not nearly as exciting as in 1921 with Bubbling Over taking the lead at the break and sprinting away from the field in the stretch to score by five lengths with Bag genbaggage closing fast to be second three lengths before his nearest rival rivalIt It was 22 years until the next Derby grand slam by Calumet in 1948 with Cita ¬ tion and Coaltown easily the best of their four rivals The entry was an overwhelming public choice at 2 to 5 and ran to expecta ¬ tions Coaltown opened a wide lead before a mile was completed but Citation al ¬ though losing ground most of the way took the lead in the stretch and won handily by three and onehalf lengths while his sta ¬ blemate was much the best of the others and three additional lengths before the third horse My Request
