GEORGE BRIDGLAND Trainer of ofMourne Mourne a candidate for the Epsom EpsomDerby Derby who won the Prix Dauphin over overthe the Le Tremblay Mile last week end France Derby St Leger Entrants Eclipsed In Action at Two Longchamp Meetings By R D GRAINGER GRAINGEROur Our Pans Correspondent PARIS France British Derby and St Leger entries seen in action at two Long champ meetings were completely eclipsed by colts holding no crosschannel assign ¬ ments In the 20000 Prix Greffulhe ten and onehalf furlongs Madame AlMarrottis 7tol shot the bonny gray Amber a son of Zuccarello Pantomine with J Deforge astride hit the front at halfwy and then cleverly beat off half ad o z e n challengers Which included the un ¬ placed Epsom nomina ¬ tions Malacca Apostol and New Deal DealAmber Amber won strictly onsmerit by nearly two lengths from Pierre Wertheimers Ch i p pendale who a forth night before had won a handicap under 111 pounds He did sur ¬ prisingly well but we think that he is un ¬ likely to supplement his owners Epsom Lavandins success of last term The prog ¬ ressive Saim who was third furnished a pointer to the usefulness of Russell L Reinemans filly Cranante She was beaten just under three lengths when conceding Saim seven pounds at MaisonsLaffitte three weeks back backIn In the 1500 Prix Marronniers Madame i Guy Weisweillers Q u i s s a c Birthday Greetings Quiloa beat 18 opponents five of which hold British classic engagements Best of this quintet was the improving Penmarch whomade a tardy start He lost six lengths trailed the field for eight of the twelve furlongs failed by a neck and lost the objection His owner Comte L Ke rouara afterward informed us that he would seek compensation at Royal Ascot instead of Epsom EpsomThe The 15000 Prix Jean Prat was run in two divisions last Sunday In th senior section for fouryearolds and upwards 15 furlongs R Meyers Orosp by Tifinar Eos returned to form by beating the six yearold Borghetto a head with Vattel and Ming close up The lastnamed trio are en ¬ gaged in the French and British Gold Cups as is Ralph B Strassburgers Pam bremer This Doncaster St Leger hero has grown into a very commending individual during the winter He was always promi ¬ nent until pressure was applied at the dis ¬ tance Condition then told its inevitable tale but we expect Cambremer to lift one of the two trophies In the threeyearold division Baron Z de Nyevelts chestnut colt Le Haar by Vieux Manoir Mince Pie compensated his connections for a prior head defeat by Saim Inside the last of the 10 furlongs J Deforge drove Le Haar past the disap ¬ pointing Al Mabsoot and then held off Roger Poincelets late challenge on Guards Tie by a halflength with Achaz nearly three lengths in arrears The Aga Khans Al Mabsoot was fourth and on this display can have little chance at Epsom EpsomLe Le Haar paid tribute to American Ber trand L Taylors nice colt Primesautier who had beerr beaten a couple of heads at Longchamp Later he made amends by winning at St Cloud for his popular owner Mrs G L Ohrstroms massive Racon ¬ teur to whom we had drawn attention when making his debut in the Priz Juigne when left a dozen lengths lost the 1500 Prix Boulogne ten and onehalf furlongs by a neck to the 59 to 1 outsider Belesis Birthday Greetings Bella n from W Heads barn Raconteur started second fa ¬ vorite at 1l2 to 2 and his defeat could solely be attributed to inexperience He will soon make his atonement now that he knows more about racing Bred from Blue Peter La Farondole this grand chestnut has the cut of a dyedinthewool stayer and is most promising In Raconteur and Royjmmont Mrs Ohstrom has two smart colts that grade high They will be profitable profitableThe The 4500 Prix Daphnis over the Le Tremblay mile last week end attracted five colts Main interest was centered in R B Strassburgers Epsom Derby hope Mourne a slashing IS hands chestnut by the 1950 Grand Prix winner Vieux Manoir out of Ballynash a Nasrullah mare mareMaking Making his seasonal debut Mourne was a 11 to 10 favorite His chief opponent was F Dupres Lucidon who by previously de ¬ feating the smart Amber had a big follow ¬ ing at 5 to 4 No doubt Lucidons excellent performance influenced backers Even so Lucidon was at a disadvantage of nine pounds on Free Handicap ratings ratingsBackers Backers were however sadder and wiser after the event for Mourne restrained by byF F Palmer for seven furlongs effortlessly took over from Lucidon to win very im ¬ pressively by two lengths a verdict which did not truly indicate the superiority of the Strassburger colt coltMourne Mourne has all the attributes which make a champion He has splendid bone is deep in the brisket with good heartroom and has terrific leverage behind the saddle Be ¬ fore his crosschannel venture Mourne will contest the 15000 Prix Daru lO1 fur ¬ longs at Longchamp on May 26 Another facile triumph in this race would we fancy see the Bridglandtrained colt claim a favor ¬ ites chance in the Epsom Derby On the same afternoon the 1500 Prix Chloe one mile attracted 11 fillies Two necks divided Baron G de Waldners Ama belle Goyama Fast Beauty Tehmany making her first appearance this term and Aquarelle II Amabelle may have been a shade lucky to find an opening 50 yards from the wire but her unflinching courage plus a super speed burst deserved success successThe The firstnamed pair are in the British Oaks but we thought the race a good public trial for the French equivalent Prix Diane at Chantilly on June 9 Theres just the possibility that Tehmany will have derived sufficient benefit by then to reverse plac ings over a more severe track as the Aga Khans nominee is more likely to get the extended trip of 10 furlongs furlongsBRIEFLY BRIEFLY Auteuil closed down last week until June 3 when the summer session be ¬ gins and ends on July 11 T Catalogues for the Deauville Sales August 1724 will be sent air mail free on request on July 1 Application should be made to Office Pur du Sang 10 Rue de Cirque Paris 8 G Darley has been appointed European representative for the Santa Anita track Sean Murphy of Dublin holds the authority to receive overseas entries for Hollywood Turf Club
