May 7. — A census of Balmorals growing horse colony here at Washington Park reveals many of the brightest stars in racing are being groomed for the 30-day meeting which opens Monday. There are over 500 horses quartered at the local track, with 400 more due this week from Kentucky. Easily the strongest and most competitive thoroughbred colony for a spring meeting here include Swoons Son. Mahan. Sir Tribal. Splendored. Jet Colonel, Ro-manita and Sea OErin. Far and away Balmorals first citizen is E. Gay Drakes brilliant Swoons Son. runner-up to Needles as the nations three-year-old champ of 1956. and a smashing winner of last weeks Churchill Downs Handicap under top impost of 128 pounds in his 1957 debut. The Drake whiz, winner of both the Arlington Classic and the American Derby as well as Balmorals Chicagoan last season, will be a prominent figure in all Balmoral stakes for older horses. Now a four-year-old. Swoons Sons initial Chicago appearance is expected to be in Balmorals 0. 000 -added La Salle Handicap at six furlongs on the meetings first Saturday. May 18. Decathlon May Go in La Salle There remains the possibility that River Divide Farms Decathlon. 1956 American sprint champion, will challenge Swoons Son in the La Salle. Grass-course racing gets its measure of the spotlight again for 1957 as Americas ranking grass specialists from the nations strongest stables are converging on Chicago. Heading the list once again is Allie E. Reubens Hasty House Farm and its powerful foreign-bred contingent of Mahan. victor over Swaps in last years Arch Ward Memorial at Washington Park; Summer Solstice and Bryn. Also. Mrs. Harry L. Nathensons Blue Choir, Charles Fritz Sir Tribal. D. E. Lovemans Sunningdale, Wal-mac Farms Hasseyampa. and a barnful of grass expeits from Argentina belonging to South American Juan DAgostino. The Chicago three-year-old division is loaded with exceptional talent. Fans can expect to see Federal Hill. Better Bee, Jet Colonel, Shan Pac. Barbarian and Camel-back in action during the 30 -day meeting. Frad W. Hoopers Greek Game also will be on the grounds prepping for a return to the races later this summer. The filly division, which will launch the Balmoral season in Mondays 5,000-added Coronet Stakes, also will attract much attention. Last years two-year-old filly queen. Romanita. will head the imposing roster which also will include Donald McKellars Splendored, winner of the 1956 Princess Pat Stakes at Washington Park; Mrs. Harry Trotseks and Hasty House Farms Delamar; Fred W.
