Cohoes Returns in Excellent Form Leads Throughout Sandy Point Purse Holds Two-Length Edge on Misty Flight; Viscount Wins As Warhead Finishes Last By BOB HORWOOD JAMAICA. L. I., N. Y., May 4.— Brought back to the races razor sharp by John Gaver, Greentree Stables Cohoes delighted the favorite players in the crowd of 24,109 by literally towroping his field in todays featured Sandy Point Purse. With Manuel Ycaza taikng him in hand through the final furlong, Cohoes reached the end of 6 furlongs n 1:11% two lengths before Wheatley Stables Misty Flight, who led Michael G. Phipps Start Counting another two and one-half lengths. King Ranchs Dotted Line, who was also making her seasonal debut, was three lengths out of the money. Cohoes paid .20. Cohoes is a five-year-old son of Mah-moud — Belle of Troy, by Blue Larkspur, who had not started since finishing unplaced in the Vosbergh Handicap at Belmont Park last October 18. Earlier last year, he had won the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, the Sysonby Handicap at Belmont and the Brooklyn at Jamaica, as well as two overnight events. He is eligible to next Mondays Toboggan Handicap at Belmont Park and to the Carter on May 20 and may start in both events. Much more tranquil going to the gate than usual, Cohoes outbroke his field, then proceeded to outrun them. At the end of a quarter, Cohoes led Misty Flight by a half length, with Page Seven only a head farther back on the outside. The leaders continued to race almost as a team to the quarter pole, where Ycaza clucked to Cohoes and the bay horse bounded away from his rivals to open up a four-length lead at hes furlong marker. At the same time, Page Seven fell back, while Start Counting began to move up on the extreme outside. Ycaza Has Tight Hold Through the final furlong, Ycaza took a snug hold of Cohoes and the favorite pa-paded to the wire with his neck bowed and his ears pricking. Misty Flight gained a couple of lengths under suffrance through the last eighth, while Start Counting finished fairly well. Dotted Line, who is in Saturdays Grey Leg Handicap with 109 pounds, finished fairly well and should improve. Only four horses went postward in the North Shore Purse. One of them, Mrs. Mabel C. Scholtz Warhead, was backed down to odds-on. He finished last. And he did not feel even one sting from jockey Eddie Arcaros whip. Georgianna Fosters Viscount won the dash, closing with a well-timed rush under Harlan Dalton to neck Myron N. Goodwins Jimmer. It was another two lengths back to Maurice Newtons Egostical, who set the early pace. Warhead was another length in arrears, at the en dof 6 furlongs in 1:11. On April 27. Warhead was beaten a nose by Tick Tock under the same impost of 124 pounds that he carried today in 1:10 Vs. The track was dry and fast both days. Jimmer was first out of the gate at the start of the North Shore, closely followed by iVscount and Egotistical. At the end of a quarter, Egotistical led Jimmer more than two lengths, while Viscount was a similar margin away in third place, three lengths before Warhead. Passing the three -furlong pole, Jimmev moved to Egotistical and the pair hooked up in a duel that endured to the furlong pole, where Jimmer moved away and appeared to hafe the race won. Inside the eighth pole, Dalton sharply roused Viscount, who closed with a rush to make up more than two lengths and score narrowly, but going away. Warhead was three lengths behind Jimmer at the furlong pole. He was three lengths and a neck behind Viscount at the finish.
