Whichones Impressive Debut Champion Two Year Old of Last Year Wins First Start of 1930 Runs Mile in 1 37 to Easily Account for Ballot BallotHandicap Handicap Coin Collector Triumphs in inHarlem Harlem Claiming Stakes NEW YORK N Y May 28 The brilliant Whiclione qualified handsomely for his engagement in the Withers Stakes Saturday when he was an easy winner o the Ballot Handicap at Belmont Park this aCternoon H P Whitneys juvenile champion of last year was opposed hy Gifford A Cochrans Xenofol to which he conceded fourteen pounds and the fouryearold Houssain from the Rancocaa Stable which was in receipt of seventeen pounds on the scale Under this handpj cap and in a driving rain which howi ever had no appreciable effect on tha footing he raced one mile in 1 37 with ease It was simply a good workout for his With ¬ ers Stakes engagement and testified to the grand condition to which he has been brought by Tom Healey HealeyThis This was not the actual feature of the pro ¬ gram for there was the Harlem Claiming Stakes over the one mile route but the presence of Whichone on the course gave his performance greater sporting importance importanceAfter After all the unseasonable weather there was another miserable day for the sport It was uncomfortably cold and there was an almost constant rainfall though the track was in such a condition that in the early races dust was flying and the welting had little effect on speed speedSTRIKING STRIKING PERFOR3IANCE PERFOR3IANCEWhat What impressed in Whichones performance was the ease with which he carried his 12G pounds and the supreme confidence in which he was ridden by Sonny Workman Hous sain beat the other two away from the barrier slightly but Whichone moved up until he was alongside and once there Workman took a good hold of his head and only galloped to keep step with the fouryearold Xenofol was a couple of lengths back in the early racing and Kelsay was content to remain within reach of the others as the son of Negofol went along smoothly Before the stretch was reached Whichone without being asked to extend himself had raced Houssain into submission and turned for home well clear Then it was that Kelsay shook Xeno ¬ fol up and the maiden quickly raced past Houssain to go after the champion That was a fruitless chase and when Kelsay so realized he did not unduly punish the colt The result was that Whichone was winner by two lengths while the Cochran colt had beaten Houssain a like distance distanceWhichone Whichone came out of the race magnifi ¬ cently for he had only been asked to gallop and it was a move to indicate his complete readiness for the Withers Stakes StakesHARLEM HARLEM TO COIN COLLECTOR COLLECTORThe The Harlem Claiming Stakes saw Coin Collector from the Sagamore Stable winner and he was repeating for he won the same race last year This renewal had a net value of 3775 and it was P S P Ran ¬ dolphs Gay Past that raced to second place with James Butlers Awake the one to save third from Marshall Fields Perkins PerkinsThe The start was a good one and Brown Wiz ¬ ard was soon showing the way and going along under restraint Awake was in second place and Gay Past raced closely after the Butler colt with Coin Collector fourth but a length and a half back and racing well out in the middle of the course courseBrown Brown Wizard was going so smoothly in the lead that almost to the stretch turn he looked all over a winner but on the turn there was some closing up on him Gay Past making a challenge while Coin Collector went to the outside and made up ground rapidly rapidlyA A furlong Out Brown Wizard was tiring and there Gay Past virtually had him beaten but Coin Collector continued to gain and Bethel soon went to a drive on the Randolph colt while Glorioso on Coin Collector was depending on a hand ride Stride by stride the son of Golden Guinea drew up until he was past and at the end was winner by a length and a half halfBar Bar Hunter a son of Black Servant Bit of White racing for E R Bradley and rid ¬ den by E Legere accounted for the fifth race a dash through the Widener course The race was for maidens and brought to ¬ gether a field of nineteen nineteenRonald Ronald Grey a son of Sir Ronald and Clare Boothe and racing for Uis breeder William Woodward was winner of the opening four and a half furlongs race It attracted six ¬ teen selling plater juveniles of the better grade William Garths Meek was a close second and Green Light from the Sagamore Continued on twentysecond page WHICHONE EASY WINNER Continued from first page Stable was lapped on the pair of them Fourth went to Novena racing for Mrs Walter M Jeffords and she was plainly best having closed a big gap after being away slowly and at the end was going better than the three that led her past the finish finishMeek Meek and Green Light were the ones to set most of the pace but they never drew out from the others running together closely lapped Inside the final furlong Meek drew away slightly but in the meantime Ronald Grey was steadily making up ground and right at the end got up to win by a head while Meek had beaten Green Light by a like distance distanceNovena Novena after beginning last and swerving badly worked her way up through the others steadily and was just another half length back backThe The Weldship Steeplechase Handicap brought out only four starters but it resulted in an excellent contest with Walter J Sal ¬ mons Hermitage the winner Ho led home Mrs C V B Cushmans Dragon de Vertu while the Dorwood Stables Stalker beat the Essex Stables Huette for third From a good start Stalker was the one to set the pace Donoghue had him under a steady restraint as he galloped along half a dozen lengths before the others and first Huette and then Dragon de Vertu held second place while Campbell was rating Hermitage along further back but always within striking distance Through the back field the last turn of the course Stalker was still going easily in the lead but at the upper end of the course Campbell permitted the Salmon fouryear old to run along more freely and lie quickly came into close contention
