Mr. Spreckels claimed several horses during the past few months, including Shasta Broom, former handicap performer, and Mardie, useful sprinter. The two-year-old Modesto, winner of five races in Florida during the winter, is on the ailing list. The youngster is the property of S. F. Murphy. At noon today a total of fifty riders had reported to Bill Owens, in charge of the jockeys quarters. Half of the number are apprentices. Dr. Boyd Jeffers, official veterinarian for the Agua Caliente track, was an arrival and will practice in Illinois during the coming summer. Starter Morrisseys present crew includes Joe Nelson, Paul Young and Frank Carra. His other assistants, Eddie Thomas and John Morrissey, who remained at Tanforan, will go direct to Washington Park at the conclusion of the western meeting and school horses before the opening. Jockey Jim Neal, one of the countrys leading apprentices, was an arrival from Havre de Grace. Six horses, the property of the Lone Star Stable, and the same number belonging to R. L. Rogers were recent arrivals from Maryland. Clarence Davison reports that his good string of campaigners stood the long trip from Tanforan in good condition. No More, star of the stable, has had a long rest and will likely be prominent in sprints and handicaps during the coming summer. Frank Farrar, who recently arrived from the West Coast with the useful plater Che-halis, will van the animal from Hawthorne tomorrow. Chehalis was winner of six races during the Tanforan meetings. W. H. Farrington, a Chicago business man, entered the sport of racing today when he purchased Fair Mole, a two-year-old, by Sand Mole — Virginity, from S. F. Murphy. • Mr. Farrington intends buying several more horses in the near future. Murphy will 1 continue to train Fair Mole, which has 1 never started. Jockey J. Boucher was granted a license ! this morning. The horses of J. P. Keezek, which fared ■ 1 well during the Agua Caliente and Tanforan I meetings, are en route from the West and 1 are expected to arrive Wednesday. Pana 1 Franka, a star two-year-old, heads the string. Before leaving New Orleans G. H. Neal 1 J purchased the contract on apprentice L. Cantrell from Major Nicholson and the lad j had his first mount for his new employer Monday. Cantrell can ride at 100 pounds.
