j LATEST KENTUCKY DERBY I GOSSIP AND NOTES ; , . . _ . _ , ,.-_-_,,, . j J. J. Robinsons Lucky Tom, among the seven comprising the powerful eastern contingent, was scheduled for his concluding preparation Thursday. He was galloped over the Downs track Wednesday morning, as was Liberty Limited, the W. T. Waggoner and Sons hope, which trainer John F. Schorr promises to bring out for his final work of importance tomorrow. The announcement that Earl Sande had been engaged to ride Over Time in Saturdays race added interest and met with wide favor among horsemen, and enthusiasts who have followed the brilliant career of the champion rider of the past decade. The "demon blonde" will enter this fifty-eighth Derby, sharing classic riding record with Isaac Murphy, each having ridden three winners, and will have many pulling for him to end the deadlock. Sande rode Zev in 1923, Flying Ebony in 1925 and Gallant Fox in 1930, while Murphy scored with Buchanan in 1884, Riley in 1890 and Kingman in 1891. Linus McAtee, already credited with two Derby winners, Whiskery in 1927 and Clyde Van Dusen in 1929, will share Derby riding distinction with Sande and Murphy if he garners Saturdays renewal with Universe. Other of the jockeys having mounts Saturday have never ridden a classic winner. They include such of the stars as Mack Garner, who will ride Liberty Limited; Lavelle "Buddy" Ensor, who has been engaged for Stepenfetchit, stable companion of Over Time, and Laverne Fator, who will be astride Burgoo King. The result of the mile Preparation Purse run here Tuesday brought several changes in the probable starters for the fixture. Adobe Post, winner of the Preparation Purse, just about clinched a place in the Derby field, while Cee Tee, Cabezo, Our Fancy and Sazerac moved into the doubtful starters class, which also embraces Crystal Prince. If mud prevails Sazerac and Cabezo may get a chance at classic honors. : . , . j , f . i - r 1 1 m
