PRINCE ATHELING FAST ♦ Gallops Mile in Fastest Time of Kentucky Season. « Easily Outruns Stock Market to Win Feature at Churchill Downs — Ellen D. in Front. » LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 4.— Running the fastest mile of the Kentucky season, John Marschs Prince Atheling, odds-on choice, easily accounted for the Tyler Hotel Purse, the principal race on an attractive mid-week program at Churchill Downs today. Galloping the distance in 1:38, the popular victor won much as he pleased by three lengths from Stock Market. Two and one-half lengths farther back Thistle Ace nosed out Street Singer and Rowdy Boy for third money. Only six started with Snow King, whose fast early pace was an important factor in the result, last. As Snow King ran the quarter in :23!£ and the half-mile in :464i, Stock Market pressed him and upon going to the front on the stretch turn the J. W. Parrish gelding had but little left with which to cope with the victors charge. Before the final eighth was reached Prince Atheling had supplanted the Parrish veteran in the leaders position, and from that point to the finish Prince Atheling had little to do to pile up his enormous advantage. Although greatly distressed, Stock Market continued through the stretch and on to the finish with too much speed for the others. VICTORY FOR BRADLEY. The Lilies of the Valley Purse, fourth on the program and for three-year-old fillies, resulted in a good contest and victory for E. R. Bradleys Boiling Water. Running the seven-eighths in 1:26%, she won by three-quarters of a length from Princess Came-lia. Peggy Lehmann, three lengths back, took third in a close finish with Modern Queen. The race was the first real test of Oaks candidates during the meeting, and it attracted interest rivalling that placed in the feature. Oscillation, which, like the winner, was making her first start of the year, was the favorite, but she ran into bad luck entering the stretch, where she was forced out of a contending position. After obtaining room she was unable to get going again. As Princess Camelia set the pace, Elston, who was riding his second winner, had the Bradley filly in close pursuit and, bringing her out of close quarters for the stretch run, came through too fast for the early pacemaker, which, however, outstayed Peggy Lehmann. OPINION GRADUATES. Opinion, short priced favorite, carried the Everglade Stable colors to victory in the opening race, which engaged twelve maiden juvenile colts and geldings over four and one-half furlongs. He won in a canter by five lengths from Sun Gros, which outstayed Hildur Rock. Others in the large field were well in the wake of the leaders throughout. W. Fronk, who had the mount on the winner, was content to permit Hildur Rock to set the early pace and it was not until he straightened up the son of Wise Counsellor in the stretch that he permitted him to take command. Racing past Hildur Rock entering the last eighth, he came away fast thereafter and Sun Gros got up to beat the tiring IJildur Rock in the late stages. O. Viau furnished the winner of the second race when Ellen D. scored in easy fashion over Dizzy, Tadcaster and nine others that raced under claiming conditions. After allowing Hard Lines to show the way to the end of the first quarter, Rose sent the winner to the front, and she drew away into a long lead which she never relinquished. Tadcaster, which was favorite over the winner, moved into a contending position turning into the stretch but gave way to Dizzy, which came with a rush in the final furlong. A second juvenile son of Wise Counsellor was seen in front when Otherwise, William Continued on thirty-second page. PRINCE ATHELING FAST Continued from first page. E. Smiths gelding, nosed out Le Bruyere for the prize in the South Park Purse, third on the card and also over four and one-half furlongs. Dry Ridge was third, four lengths back and clear of Hasty Peter, which outraced Justice Logan, favorite, for fourth money. Both the latter two had to race wide, and the big loss of ground took so much from their chances that neither seriously threatened the leaders at any stage of the race. G. Elston got the winner away fast, but it was not until reaching the stretch that he succeeded in attaining the clear margin which stood him in fine stead as Le Bruyere steadily reduced his advantage in the last eighth. After following in closest attendance of the winner to the stretch turn, Dry Ridge found the pace too fast and dropped back slowly during the run to the finish. «
