Invaders worked were Tick On, Stepenfetchit, Over Time, Universe, Brandon Mint and Economic, with Burgoo King, Brother Joe and Cathop making up the "home trio." All were indulged with long drills at a steady, testing pace, and with the lone exception of Brother Joe, which was a trifle sore following his final rehearsal, came out of the rather rigorous trials in excellent physical trim. Tick On, Stepenfetchit, Over Time and Universe disported themselves in a fashion that further emphasized the strength of the invading contingent and the general opinion that prevailed after the extensive morning activity was that the East holds its strongest Derby hand in many years. "While the race is one of the most open in recent years," said a veteran of the turf, "the East will be hard to repulse, and from what I have seen, Colonel Bradleys pair are the best from this section." Of the nine distance trials those of Tick On and Burgoo King were the more impressive. Trainer Max Hirsch brought out the Loma Stable colt at an early hour and equipped with blinkers and with Pete Walls in the saddle, the son of On Watch and Sox went the full Derby route in 2:07. He was lightly indulged in the late stages of the long workout. Brandon Mint, the Robert W. Daniel candidate, trained by Frank M. Bray, followed in behind the Derby choice, going the mile and one-quarter in 2:09%, driving. Trainer H. J. Thompson awaited the arrival =ca of Col. E. R. Bradley before ordering Bur goo King and Brother Joe under saddle, and with L. Fator astride Brother Joe and L. Hale on Burgoo King, the prides of Idle Hour Farm went to the quarter pole for the inauguration of their concluding preparation. Burgoo King showed the way to his companion throughout, running the mile and one-quarter in 2:08, handily, while Brother Joe, after dropping back slowly during the last three-eighths, finished in 2:09. The latter colt was under strong pressure the last quarter. Universe, T. M. Cassidys winner of the Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica last Saturday, also went the Derby distance, but trainer Joe Bauer ordered him restrained to a comparatively slow pace, and with his instructions carried out, the son of Infinite and Plaid was rated over the route in 2:13%. He was never out of a breeze and was accompanied by Mammy Singer, which was greatly outmatched, getting over the route in 2:16. Continued on twenty-eighth page. TICK ON WORKS DERBY ROUTE Continued from first page. Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Stepenfetchit and Over Time and J. H. Louchheims Economic went a mile and one-eighth each, and R. M. Eastmans Cathop a mile and one; quarter. The latter westerner was timed in 2:09% and the trial taxed him almost to the fullest. Stepenfetchit went in 1:55, handily, and Over Time, put to a drive to keep on even terms with his stable companion, covered the distance in like time. L. Ensor had the leg up on Stepenfetchit, and J. Shanks handled Over Time. James W. Healy, trainer of the Whitney colts, directed the trials, and trainer J. T. Taylor had Carl Meyer work the Eastman gelding. Jockey F. Horn, who worked Economic, failed to await the placing of blinkers on the Louchheim colt after he had galloped a mile, and the son of Infinite and Karelia was inclined to loaf as Horn directed him over the nine furlongs from the eighth pole | back to the stand. For the distance, he was caught in 1:59% and as the work did not tire the invader, trainer Clarence Buxton announced that he would work him about three-quarters some time tomorrow. During the first mile of his trial today, Economic was accompanied by Al Nieman. The fractional time for the nine Derby trials follow: Tick On, :24*i, :49%, 1:15%, 1:41%, 1:54, 2:07, driving.
