Coe Racer Adds to Earnings in Spring Handicap. a Surpiteingly Large Crowd at Jamaica — Waylayer and Pardee Race Disappointingly — Mountain Elk Best. a ■ ■ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 4.— Pompeiua, the son of Pompeii— Elvina, which races for W. R. Coe, was an easy winner of the Spring Handicap, a six furlongs sprint that featured the mid-week program at Jamaica. Villon, from the Marshall Field stable, was the one to finish second, while C. V. Whitneys Clotho was third. Six started, the withdrawal from the overnight entry list being Old Master, from the Howe Stable, and he started in the fifth race. Pompeius, in his Jamaica races this spring, had been pitted against the best of the three-year-olds over a longer distance and on the strength of these past two efforts was neglected by the players when brought back to a sprinting effort. There was a surprisingly large crowd out and clear weather prevailed. The track was fast and it was a well balanced stake offering that netted the winner ,300. Little time was lost at the post and when the start came Villon and Pompeius moved into command at once, with Waylayer and Pardee in the rear. The two leaders quickly drew away from the others and on the far turn the Coe starter drew away with ease. McAtee drove Villon hard and for a short distance the colt responded, but was unequal to the task of catching the leader. Clotho, which had improved his position fast, slipped through on the inside entering the stretch and near the end was going strong. Villon, however, held the Whitney representative safe, but v/as far back of the winner. Pompeius turned in a smashing effort from a time standpoint. The disappointments of the race were Waylayer and Pardee. They were outrun from the start, although Waylayer was in close quarters for a few strides after the start. Apprentice S. Coucci rode exceptionally well to score a double victory in the first and second races of the afternoon. In the opener he registered with Chief Daunt, which had a safe margin over Timorous and Revonah. In the second, the Franklin Claiming Handicap, Coucci piloted Playfole to triumph over Stormy Dawn and Pennate. Mountain Elk was an easy winner of the three horse race styled the Arizona Handicap. Ridden by Kurtsinger, he slipped through on the inside on the first turn and, once in command, never left the result In doubt. Martis chased him home, while farther back in third place was J. E. Wideners Curate. The winner was a pronounced choice in the calculations. Little time was lost at the barrier, and the start was a good one.
