WORLDS FAMOUS EPSOM DERBY Twenty-Four Three-Year-Olds to Vie for Supremacy in Englands Greatest of All Classic Races Two American-Owned Candidates EPSOM DOWNS, England, May 30. The worlds famous Epsom Derby will be run here tomorrow. While the withdrawal of Princess De Faucigny-Lucinges, French invader Rodosto, from the Derby field robbed the race of much international flavor and interest, it has not changed the open aspect of this years Epsom classic. The renewal tomorrow promises one of the most intriguing races of the present century. The eleventh hour scratching also of John A. Dewars Lochiel, winner of the Craven Stakes this 1 spring, at Newmarket, reduced the Derby field to twenty-four, and left the veteran horseman Steve Donoghue, the rider of six Derby winners, without a mount, t f j EPSOM DERBY FIELD Horse. Manitoba will be piloted by Englands premier jockey, Gordon Richards. He is riding in splendid form this season, and has high hopes of winning his first Derby. Lord Derbys Hyperion, winner of the Chester Vase and one of two horses in the race to win over the full Derby course, is a well backed second choice, while the same owners Thrapstone is one of the outsiders. If either horse should win, it will be the third success for the house of Stanley. The race itself was named after the twelfth earl of Derby, who won it in 1787, eight years after the Epsom Classic was first run. Then came a gap of centuries until the present Lord Derby won with Sansovino in 1924. Lord Durhams Scarlet Tiger, stablemate of Hyperion and Thrapstone, fifth choice in the betting, is considered by some New Market critics a better Derby candidate than his stable companions. Young Lover, bred to race this exacting course, is the third choice in the betting, while Felicitation is favored by a wide margin over Gino. Sir Hugo Cunliffe-Owens King Salmon, runner-up in the One Thousand Guineas and Newmarket Stakes, is a firm fourth choice. This consistent son of Salmon Trout, half-brother to the 1930 Derby winner, Blenheim, should prove a hard horse to beat. Others in tomorrows Derby field well sup- ported are Maj. C. Behrens Light Sussex and J. E. Marshalls Happy Call, whl-jh are rated surprise possibilities. The American-owned colt, Victor Emanuels Statesman, is another conceded a better chance than his most recent efforts indicate. The French-owned Interlace and the -Irish-owned and bred Harinero, brother to the 1929 Derby-St. Leger winner, Trigo, are .the best outsiders in this very open classic, which will be contested for the 450th tlme-
