MR. KHAYYAM COMING Woods Memorial Winner Expected at Washington Park Today. Other Eastern Candidates for American Derby Also Due Fair Rochester Works Full Route. HOMEWOOD, III., May 30. The first of the leading eastern candidates for the twenty-fifth American Derby, to be run at Washington Park Saturday, are due at that track Wednesday. This initial shipment of invaders will include the Catawba Farms Mr. Khayyam, eastern choice for the race. The big son of the Kentucky Derby winner, Omar Khayyam and Alice Foster, is making the westward jaunt in charge of trainer M. J. Brady, and jockey Pete Walls will be here to ride him in Saturdays mile and one-quarter race. In his last start Mr. Khayyam scored over De Valera, Head Play and others in the Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica, and prior to the Kentucky Derby, in which he was unplaced to Brokers Tip, Head Play and Charley O., accounted for the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace. He is a serious bidder for the three-year-old crown and a victory in the American Derby would give him almost undisputed claim to the title. In the same shipment will come Gold Basis, the son of Dis Done that will carry the M. L. Schwartz colors which Gusto, carried to victory in the Washington Park fixture last year. He has had special pointing for Saturdays race and clinched a chance at the local prize when he worked a mile and one eighth easily in 1:55 at Belmont Park Monday. Gold Basis was a good colt early in the season as he raced with much distinction at Hialeah Park. Frank Garrett, trainer for the local patron, John E. Hughes, is on his way here with Silent Shot, an American Derby candidate and several others from Maryland and the stable of P. A. Markey, of Detroit, headed by the American Derby nominee, Swinhaven, was reported in the same car. George Land, with a large division of the Willis Sharpe Kilmer stable, is arriving at Lincoln Fields today. Kilmer named six for the American Derby and it is believed that one or two of the eligibles are included in Lands band. Fair Rochester, the fine son of For Fair and Lady Rochester, owned by Lon Jones and Son of Louisville, turned in a sparkling trial for Saturdays race, when he went the Derby route on a fast course at Lincoln Fields this morning in 2:10. He was restrained throughout, maintained an even pace the first mile and one-eighth and was under stronger restraint thereafter, the final eighth being accomplished at little more than a strong gallop. The fractional time was: quarter in :25; half in :50; three-quarters in 1:15; mile in 1:42 and mile and one-eighth in 1:55. After the trial the senior Jones let it be known that barring mishap Fair Rochester would be a starter; rain or shine. Misguide, the Le Mar Stock Farms Derby hopeful, was sent a half mile at Washington Park by trainer H. S. Hart. He covered the distance in :49, handily, and is scheduled for something much more exacting tomorrow. With indications pointing to a large field and a great race, interest in the Derby is unusually sharp and Washington Park may be called upon to accommodate the largest crowd of the entire ,Chicago season. Requests for boxes and. reserved seats are heavier than at the same time last year.
