LATONIA STAKES CLOSING Seven Features at Milldale Course Open Until June 1 Latonia Derby on July 1. HOMEWOOD, 111., May 30. All the leading western stables, and a large number of the more fashionable eastern establishments, will be represented in the stakes to be run during the summer meeting of the Latonia Jockey Club, opening at Latonia on Saturday, June 24, according to early subscriptions to the seven features, nominations for which close Thursday, June 1. The stakes carry 5,000 in added money and are headed by the Latonia Derby, exclusively for three-year-olds and the only race of its kind in this country decided over the English or Epsom Derby distance of one mile and one-half. From Latonia, Col. M. J. Winn, executive director of the Latonia Jockey Club, today was advised that nominations were coming in nicely and that if last minute subscriptions hold up to expectations, all of the features would be heavily patronized. In addition to the Latonia Derby, the stakes closing Thursday are; The Clipsetta Stakes, for two-year-old fillies; Cincinnati Trophy, for two-year-old colts and geldings; Latonia Oaks, for three-year-old fillies; Quickstep Handicap, for three-year-olds and over; Independence Handicap, for three-year-olds and over and Enquirer Handicap, for three-year-olds and over. The meeting will embrace thirty-one days and the Derby will head the program for July 1, the second Saturday of the meeting. Dates for other of the stakes and handicaps will be announced within the next few days. The usual large number of Kentucky stables, which seldom campaign at the Chicago tracks, will be the first on the grounds. With the close of Churchill Downs a week ago, a number of the larger strings and a score or more smaller stables went direct to Latonia and others will follow from Louisville, within a week or ten days of the meeting. Several stables, shipped to Lexington from Churchill Downs and Douglas Park, also have reservations at Latonia.
